British MP: Data suggesting rise in U.K. anti-Semitism are misleading

But British Jewish watchdog says 'there is no doubt' there has been rise in hate crimes in U.K.

Recent data suggesting a significant increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Britain this year may be misleading, according to Labor MP John Mann, chair of the all-party Parliamentary Committee against Anti-Semitism (PCAA).

Speaking in Israel on Monday to members of the Israel, Britain and the Commonwealth Association, Mann said that a 2009 report by the Jewish community's watchdog group, The Community Security Trust (CST), proves that the work of his and similar groups is prompting more Jews to report racist behavior.

IBCA chairman Austen Science, hosted Mann and 180 other guests at the Tel Aviv Hilton Monday for the association's annual Balfour Dinner.

But the CST director of communications, Mark Gardner, told Haaretz on Tuesday that "there is no doubt" that there has been a sharp climb in the number of racially motivated attacks in the United Kingdom.

"The work of groups such as CST and PCAA should encourage people to report anti-Semitic hate crimes. We hope that reporting rates have improved in recent years, but sadly there is no doubt that the number of hate crimes has also risen substantially," Gardner said.

Sometimes my problem with being Jewish in the UK is

reading talkbacks like what we see here from a largely narrow minded American audience who think that all UK Jews have it so bad that are scared to walk outside our doors etc. We are well represented in all forms of life, come in all shapes/sizes, from the top of power, ranging from some of our senior ministers in government, celebs in popular culture, education.. the UK DOES teach the holocaust in schools, it never stopped?!? so those who say it isnt taught as to not offend muslims needs to learn more themselves. I deplore all forms of hate. I am a happy English Jew, living Jewishly without any problems or my family, feel ridiculous to even justify that to as I said, a largely narrow minded audience on this. I do not recall the last time the UK discovered bomb plots against synagogues, shooting men at synagogues, shooting at Holocaust museums, which America just had. The UK has sadly seen an incident such as this story but nothing to the scale of bombs or aimed at Jews, like USA

OK, here I am ...your Jewish woman , who walks to Synagogue each week...wearing a hat. BAD eh! Grown up in the UK...never known anti semitism from the people I went to Uni with or have worked with over 30 years. Last few years, called "dirty Jew" and other charming epithets on the way to Synagogue regularly. Husband and friends coming back on Friday night EVERY week...called at from cars because they wear Kipot. On Simchat Torah last year walking back, from the service...sworn at by men in a car and had drink thrown from window at us.Anti Semitism IS ALIVE AND WELL IN THE UK. Nothing to do with banks or unemployment. The people I work with are horrified to hear all this. Is it Asian Muslims...or the BNP morons? You choose! It doesn't matter, but it IS HAPPENING and INCREASING.

there has been a surge in the PUBLIC ACCEPTABILITY of attacks on Jews across a wide spectrum of British society. This cannot help but have an impact, encouraging the more violent bigots out there to take brainless, violent steps to attack the people that their leaders and the media (such as the Guardian) repeatedly and viciously blast. Seriously, if you saw the peaceful Jewish protests in defense of Israel during Gaza, and watched how violent extremists attacked these protesters, you can see exactly what is going on. Was this allowed in the past? No. Is anything done to stop it now? No.

If people like Ari Gold 3 have specific instances of anti-semitic activity in Britain, then by all means tell us the details. Anti-semitism, like any racism, is disgraceful and should be stopped. What should also be stopped though is the strange twisted parodies of Britain that people who appear to know nothing about the country put on this site. I've only heard about 2 or 3 people in my life say anything rude about Jews as a people, and even those comments were pretty mild and supposed to be jokes. Muslims are only 3 per cent of the population. Most of them are very moderate, particularly the 2nd and 3rd generation Muslims, many of whom aren't particularly religious at all.

It is not surprising that anti-Semitism is on the rise in Britain. The country is being over-run by Muslims and there isn't the guts among British politicians to put a stop to it. Where there are Muslims, there is anti-Semitism. A battle is waging world-wide and most people are disinterested or complicit.

The real Brits have and are always been anti-semitic. Now it is very open. That many non-Brits are no in the UK does not make it easier. No sense of trying to whitewash it.

As an American working in England I can tell you that both countries have similar problems. For generations the UK has been the strongest ally of the USA whether in finance or in Afghanistan and Iraq fighting the war on terror.

Not sure where you're getting your information from, and i'm a little confused as to what the part-nationalisation of banks has got to do anything in this article? Would be like me discussing the US bailout of the car industry, i.e. total pointless. I'm not sure which parts of the UK you've visited, but as an atheist living in a very multi-ethnic part of London, I get absolutely no sense that Muslims are taking over anything. In fact all manner of colours and creeds seem to get on rather well over here. Israel should try it sometime.

Operation Cast Lead was portrayed in the media as a massive attack on women and children rather than an attack on terrorists operating within civilian areas -- terrorists legally elected to govern Gaza. I don't doubt that Cast Lead caused a major increase in anti-Jewish feeling in some sectors of the population, but overall the UK probably has the lowest figures for anti-Semitism in the EU.

Of course, the UK isn't alone in that regard. I had to show my passport to visit synagogues in Rome and Prague. Every "Jewish" site in Germany I visited - including a kosher eatery - have a police presence. The Jewish community center in Frankfurt is behind a tall fence on a closed street, and I was questioned and "wanded" before entering a synagogue there. France isn't much better. Yeah, keep telling yourself it's just anti-Zionism.

David,I have been on the receiving end of some serious abuse that was unambigious in its nature. Not anti-Israeli but anti-semetic. You will just have to trust me when I say I can tell the difference. Can you?.

    anti-Israel = anti-semite?
    • David
    • 03.11.09
    • 12:09

There is an increase in anti-Israeli sentiment among Brits, due to their continued arrogance and contempt for others. This is not religious bigotry. Unfortunately in a lot of minds Israeli = Jew. The continued lobbying for Israel by Jewish bodies only adds fuel to this. Time for Israel to grow up, face up to their responsibilities and stop playing the anti-semite card, it's expired.

the British MP is. Unemployment in the UK is so high, most of their reporters wont quote how many exactly are out of work. They can't be honest about anything. They're afraid of the muslims they allowed to enter the UK which will be the death of England. Now, even their banks will soon be nationalized. Couldn't happen to a weaker people. HELL BRITTANIA.
