A museum spokesman has told the BBC that the purpose of the new site is to reach the younger generation and to teach them about the Holocaust. Auschwitz also launched a YouTube channel last year, in pursuit of this new endeavor.
More than a million people were killed at Auschwitz during World War II, 90 percent of whom were Jews.
"We're always trying for new ways of reaching people, and in today's world one of the most popular tools is the internet, and on the internet millions of people use Facebook," Auschwitz Museum official Pawel Sawicki told the BBC.
He was quoted as asking, "If our mission is to educate the younger generation to be responsible in the contemporary world, what better tool can we use to reach them than the tools they use themselves?"
