ADL decries rise in U.S. hate crimes against Blacks, Jews and gays
FBI records 7,783 bias-motivated incidents in report for 2008; ADL calls for more preventative action.
By Haaretz Service Tags: ADL Israel newsThe Anti-Defamation League on Monday decried a rise in hate crimes in the United States against African Americans, Jews and gays, documented in an annual report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Hate violence in America is a serious national problem that shows little sign of slowing," said Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, in a statement. "The annual FBI report on hate crime statistics provides a chance to assess the scope of the problem."
The FBI recorded 7,783 bias-motivated incidents in the report for 2008 - the highest total since 2001, including the highest number of crimes directed at African Americans, Jews, and gay men and lesbians since 2001.
In the wake of the report, the U.S. Jewish organization called for a coordinated campaign to prevent, and respond effectively to "criminal violence motivated by bigotry and prejudice."
"While the increase in the number of hate crimes may be partially attributed to improved reporting, the fact that these numbers remain elevated - particularly the significant rise in the number of victims selected on the basis of religion or sexual orientation - should be of concern to every American," the statement added.
"With data comes awareness and accountability - which must lead to action. Too frequently we have seen that failure to address bias crimes can cause an isolated incident to fester and result in widespread community tensions."

listed as hate crimes too because they would qualify as such if they happened in america. Stop being naive , much of the anti-semitism is a direct result of your treatment of palestinians in the last sixty some od years. It blows me away that Jews wont admit this even to themselves

'Gay' describes homosexuality in a complimentary fashion. There are pejoratives which describe homosexuality in a disparaging fashion. Why is it considered wrong to use pejoratives, but not wrong to use compliments? Why not simply use the correct description of 'homosexual' without positive or negative connotations?
There were 10 times as many attacks and hate crimes directed toward Jews as Muslims. The ADL did mention Muslims in their press release (the article doesn't print it) The fact is there were 10 times as many hate crimes against Jews as there were against Muslims. While there were about 100 reported attacks on Muslims, there were well over 1,000 against Jews. You Muslims have it easy compared to us, especially when you realize that we make up less than .1 % of the population and Muslims make up about 20% of the world population
Judging from the responses the ADL is right. There's a good sampling of hate in more than a few.
which are significantly under-reported. And just who are committing many of these crimes against Jews in America or even France? Does the ADL break down hate crimes by ethnicity of perpetrator? Are hate crimes determined fairly? I doubt it. Who gets to decide what constitutes a hate crime? Honest people everywhere should judge these hate crime statistics with skepticism.
I think that the Muslim Faith need to look deeper in its core and eliminate the bigotry first, having said that , then may be.. and only may be , others will start treating you like human beings. For as long as you kill in the name of Allah, then what distinguish you from the occupiers ( they said God gave them the land ! ) .. if God did this.. and God did that .. and God gave us this and God took that .. then Jews and Muslims can have each other since God gave them the authority to do everything , good and bad . Throughout the Arab communities and mosques in America, 9/11 was either justified and/or celebrated. I am so sick of the Moslems, including the so-called Palestinians, pretending to be the victims, when in fact they are the aggressors.

Synagogue bombings, attacks on individual Jews, attacks on Christians, gays, etc. are often committed by Arabs. The number of hate crimes against Arabs in America is so small, yet, like in the Middle East, the Arab aggressors seek to be portrayed as the victim(s).

Wow, with all those hate crimes against Jews in the US, it must be time for Foxman to leave the country and go to the Zionist state he loves so much and start building it with spade in one hand and rifle in the other. Or would that be too hard work and too dangerous? Would it be safer to stay in his plush offices in the US and keep mouthing off about such vital issues as the Belgrade Hotel that had a Hitler-themed room along with a Stalin-themed room.
As long as the ADL and other US Jewish organizations are more concerned with Israel than with conditions here, it is very unlikely that they will take any steps to make life easier for American Muslims.
ADL seems to mention blacks, gays, and Jews, but what about Arabs who also face prejudice? I guess they don't count since ADL is an arm of the pro-Israel lobby. The ADL was sued some years ago for spying on Arab-Americans and anti-apartheid activits. That's pretty shameful. Such actions make you wonder how sincere the ADL is against all forms of anti-Semitism including anti-Semitism against Palestinians. Basically, it's not "never again" but, rather, "never again to one of us, but them, it's okay". It's like how Serbians complained about what Ottomans did to them and then massacred Slavic Bosnians. This is not proper conduct between humans. I hope one day that the ADL will be credible and against all racism.
ADL will only be taken seriously when it `decries` and speaks against the institutionalized racism in israel against the Arabs. As for the racism against the blacks, there is racism against black israelis (Ethiopian jews) in israel by the israelis (Unsure if the latter is institutionalized)
I've been trying to find a breakdown on "religious" hate crimes, one of the categories cited along with race and sex, so far with no luck. I'm sure many are attacks on Muslims and others, as well as those on Jews -- How ADL to revise the story.
Counting hate crimes in France depends upon whether one counts the tens of thousands of cars torched a few years ago. Maybe the Arab youth hated their countrymen, or maybe they just hated cars.
Foxman should have read the caution the FBI itself notes: "our Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program doesn?t report trends in hate crime stats?yearly increases or decreases often occur because the number of agencies who report to us varies from year to year." So you can't draw any conclusion about whether these incidents are rising, falling or staying the same.
It's cool that the ADL likes to lump itself with Blacks and Gays (can't quite swallow the lump if we added Muslims, who really are at risk) to suggest that the rising tide of criticism against Israel is nothing more than garden variety (old school) prejudice. Well, Abe Foxman, let's get real here. It has nothing at all to do with anti-semetism. It has, however, a great deal to do with considered judgements about the cruel policies of the State of Israel towards the terribly disadvantaged and brutally misused population of Palestinian people under the boot--that's right--boot--of Israel. You can't squirm away from that.

We're the most hated, persecuted and attacked minority in the USA, with no effective lobby to look after us. Despite all this the world is converting to Islam. The election of Obama outraged the American right and they are on a rampage at the moment. I am glad to see the ADL return to the sort of concern that it once had. But will it stop pandering to the rabid right as it has for a decade or more?
The FBI reported a slight increase in hate crimes, and said it was unclear if the actual number of crimes increased or crimes were just reported more. Of course, the ADL does it best to stir fears.
It is unfortunate, but I suspect there is always an upturn in civic unrest when you have an economic depression coupled with increased unemployment.
It is nice to note that the ADL is now making a fuss about hate crimes against Blacks and gays, but I remember back in 2003 when Jewish groups and the US media/political establishments were issuing all sorts of statistics showing hate crimes in France. Of course, hate crimes do indeed exist in France and just about every other major country, but as an American who knows both countries well, the US is the all-time hate crimes champion. It would be really nice if ADL were to do a hate crimes report on Israel. But that would be a step towards fairness in reporting...fat chance!!
