ADL: Carter has reverted to anti-Israel stance, despite recent apology
Statement says former president slams White House for ignoring Israel's seizure of Palestinian lands.
By Haaretz Service Tags: ADL Jewish World Jimmy Carter Israel newsFormer U.S. president Jimmy Carter's apology to the Jewish community over his anti-Israel views should not be taken seriously, an Anti-Defamation League statement said Sunday, claiming that Carter had continued attacking Israel even after sending an apologetic letter to the leaders of the U.S. Jewish community.
Late last year, the former U.S. president apologized to the American Jewish community for "stigmatizing Israel" in a letter published by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, and asked for forgiveness for his actions.
"We must recognize Israel's achievements under difficult circumstances, even as we strive in a positive way to help Israel continue to improve its relations with its Arab populations, but we must not permit criticisms for improvement to stigmatize Israel," Carter wrote.
"As I would have noted at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but which is appropriate at any time of the year, I offer an Al Het for any words or deeds of mine that may have done so," Carter wrote, referring to the prayer said on Yom Kippur in which Jews ask God for forgiveness for any sins.
In the statement released Sunday, ADL chief Abraham H. Foxman called "that apology into question following a speech in which he reverted to his former views."
The statement referred to a speech given by Carter this month which, Foxman writes, is profoundly disappointing, and leaves little doubt of the insincerity of his apology."
On one occasion, Foxman claimed, Carter accused the U.S. of being "much more attuned to the sensitivities of the Israelis" during a U.S.-Arab relations in Atlanta, adding that he felt the U.S. had "yielded excessively to the circumstances in the Holy Land as Israel has confiscated several lands within Palestine."
Carter had also, in that occasion, accused the Obama administration of unfairly siding with Israel and criticized the administration's shuttle diplomacy efforts as "feeble."
"Those remarks," the ADL statement said, "coincided with the diplomatic dust-up between Israel and the U.S. over new housing construction in East Jerusalem."
The statement also referred to a latter sent to the former U.S. president by Foxman, in which the ADL chief "questioned the sincerity of his apology and offer to continue discussions in the future - an offer Carter had proffered in a call to ADL the same day of his speech in Atlanta."
"I do not believe further discussions between us will be fruitful," Mr. Foxman wrote. "I continue to hope the day will come when you have truly repented of your insensitive views of Israel and the Jewish people."

Dear Sir, Jimmy Carter's brother Billy sold out to the Arabs in a bank scandal in the late 1970's and so there is a family tradition of male prostitution with Arab benefactors... He is a hillbilly pimping his ass to Arab money, and should be condemned for that... Shavua tov, REbbe
Thank you Jimmy Carter.
who is not afraid to tell the truth to power (a.k.a lobbyists of AIPAC). Yes, the US has unfairly sided with Israel because the cowardice of US career diplomats. They know where their bread is buttered! Yes, Dennis Ross and his negotiators downplayed settlements and as a result, helped in their growth.
The primary purpose of the ADL, despite the guise behind which its motive hides, is to advance the Zionist agenda by advancing and highlighting direct correlations(real or fabricated), and to blur the distinction, between criticism of Israeli policy(warranted or not), and the moral crime of anti-Semitism. The type of incident, over which you question its silence, falls into the category of its ostentatious purpose, and is sure to be addressed, but it's insignificant to the ADL's primary purpose, to which Carter's outspoken concerns pose a far greater threat; whereby, the ADL invokes loud proclamations of anti-Semitism where none exists, while seeming to ignore that which does. It's called "prioritizing".
@DannyM (#1): "Carter should implore the Arab countries to take in the Palestinians if he really wants to see peace." Agreed. Israel took in hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from Arab lands, most of whom lost everything without compensation. Israel also took in the refugees from the Nazis, who were aided by Arafat's uncle and other Muslims in the Holocaust. Not all of the Arabs need to go, but the terrorists do. Too bad that Arafat was allowed to return from Tunisia.
Anything Carter says cannot be taken seriously. He has been bought by the Saudis- they control what he thinks and says.
born bad, lived bad and so he will die. only the naive believe him.
Those reporters got/are getting huge sums from Israel? Please say it.I will be happy to forward it to the editors of the Australian and Herald Sun for you Reporters etc are invited by BOTH sides. No comment on BCCI and the president?
I checked: 85 really is a bit much. Pretty much rules out appointing him our envoy to the Middle East in place of Mitchell. That'd send Israel a message. It might not be a bad idea to do it anyway. It's not like there's anything to actually be NEGOTIATED with Israel. Their line's pretty much a given.
Look grandma! An antisemite just in time for the Passover seder. How low can the ADL go?
Hear hear. Not really my cup of tea, but indubitably a good man. Those who would vilify him are only commenting on themselves.
Jimmy Carter is an idiot who one could only understand after having lived under his ridiculous administration. He was perhaps the worst American President. He does nothing to distinguish himself by continuing to berate his nation for imagined sins while he is overseas. He is a traitor plain and simple.
Thankfully no! Foxman should remain in his foxhole where he can be more productive in fertilizing the ground with his infantile droppings he calls statements. Carter is expected to do what exactly? Read a script from the ADL each time he speaks in public? Get Foxman's stamp of approval? Make sure he follows the script of lies Foxman and his holocaust industry Zionist pimps want to peddle? Thankfully for us, Carter is not in office, free from the shackles of AIPAC AND CAN SPEAK HIS MIND AND TELL THE TRUTH!!
Seriously... if you stamp words around on anything it loses value. let me add also another point Carter made peace with egypt and jordan for israel... imagine where you would be without it ? and he's anti-Semitic ? if you insult him... then you very well don't deserve any friends. fact is you are stealing land in west bank and palestinians need rights. is that anti-semitic ? if you don't do it then its apartheid ? is reality anti-semitic too ?
Shazzam Pres. Carter! You drank too much of that Billy Beer. Even when you were just Sgt. Carter you were confused. You would make me clean the latrines and then you would need something else and you would look for me in the mess hall. I remember the days in Viet Nam when you would call a VC charging at you with a bayonet Miss Lillian. You always confuse Muamar Qaddafi for Lakers coach Phil Jackson. You can't tell the difference between Ehud Barak and Barak Obama. You think Netanyahu plays guitar for The Who. You think Israel is wrong when Israel is really correct! Shazaam...Lay off that Beer!
I think Carter's unfair approach to two groups of people comes from his racist nature, from his deep conviction that one of them is very much inferior to another and therefore does not worth to be criticized. For you always forgive to a stupid person something that you will never forgive to a genius.
It's getting to be an honor to be denounced by that clown. Increasingly, it puts one in some pretty rarefied company. Men of conscience, of moral courage, those who have the strength of their convictions... The irony of it all is that the ADL's avowed purpose is to combat anti-semitism. I'm entirely prepared to grant that this still exists, but Abe Foxman's transmogrification of the ADL into doughty denouncers of all who would criticize Israel suggests otherwise. They must have time on their hands.
I guess you've been spending your time reading those Nazi texts explaining why Jews are racially inferior or a "mongrolized race" or those which attempted to find a genetic basis for racial superiority of Aryans & which you now apply to Palestinians.Actually the only genetic point you prove is that cousins or siblings shouldn't have kids together because they produce idiots like you who are unable to process basic bits of history. Please go back on your meds or it's back to the institution.
Telling Israel that occupying Palestinian land is wrong, and that Israeli far right-wingers and illegal settlers arz gonna drown the whole country, does not make Carter an antisemitic. He's just telling the truth.
Jimmy Carter is a good man, who tries to show Israel the way to peace. This is why Israeli far right-wingers and settlers hate him. I wish every Israeli would realize how accusations of antisemitism against President Carter formulated by fellow Israelis destroy the image of Israel in the USA. Americans laugh at Israelis who dare accuse Carter of antisemitism. The far right wing in Israel is shooting a bullet in its own foot.
.... and hammered 2 x 4s together, he could have gone a long way in recovering his sorry legacy in the White House. His role as the paid lackey of petro-dollars to advance the anti-zion agenda has sealed his historical fate.
The Carter Center Funding must have gotten a new infusion of cash from Dubai and other middle eastern countries and despots again.
Foxman's broad brush approach pushes people apart, but I think that is his goal.
Carter is simply pro Arab, dictatorships unjust regimes ,lack of human rights and dignity that exist throughout the Arab world led by Iran,Sudan,Egypt,Saudi Arabia, mean nothing to Carter . He simply loves to attack a democracy ,called Israel .. The Jewish world will not be influenced by Carter and is aware that he represents no one but himself .
Criticizing Obama administration makes one an anti-Obama. Criticizing in Obama administration just president Obama and nobody else makes one a racist.
Carter is a non-entity and criticizing him only elevates him.
In the years preceding WWll himler and other nazi idiots wanted to trace the lineage of the hermas to the "pure aryans".They organized expeditions to Nepal, and concluded that indeed, the "pure aryans" decended from Nepalese/Tibetan warriors...PURE BULL!!! Jews come in all shapes, sizes and colors...Doesn't matter what's the DNA...Actualy,only as a curiosity,it was discovered that Armenians are much closer to Jews...The "pals" and other arabs have "Jewish D.N.A.",because after all,Jews lived all over Yemen and most of the arabic peninsula for the last 6000years.The Queen of Sheba (Belkiss) was a nice Jewish Lady, and remember, the Land of Sheba was Jewish, Moses was a Prince of Kush and his wife Tzyporah was a Kushite(From Sudan)
Wow this guy can teach Obama
I am a Zionist, but I don't see how anti-Zionism is a form of racism. Some people believe that there should be one general state there without a national identity that is either Jewish or Arab. We may disagree, but that isn't racism.
Carter is an intelligent, honorable man with vast experience. In contrast Foxman is a paid shill. Both men are running true to form, why would anyone expect otherwise? The USA is "much more attuned to the sensitivities of the Israelis" - what an astonishing revelation - thanks for the insight.
I think that Mr. Carter is just a fool. He does not understand that the law in every country (not just in Israel) treats citizens and non-citizens differently. Two lines at customs in airports, one for citizens and another for non-citizens, do not make that particular country an "apartheid state". But for Carter they do if those two lines are not in Kennedy airport in New-York city but at the West Bank check point.
You want a fair and balanced approach to both sides? A concerted criticism of both parties? Then first make bloody sure that both parties are on par with each other. That the palestinans have unhidered access to water, food, medicine, education, politcal self-determination, mean of military defense. As long as Israel denies them these things thay might as well shut the hell up.
The ADL is supposed to deal with racism against Jews and other peoples. Foxman, on the other hand, is claiming that racism and the taking of land from Palestinians must not be commented upon. To comment upon it is anti Jewish. Fortunately, many liberal Jews agree that Palestinians should be deal with in a dignified manner and their lands not confiscated for the benefit of Jewish settlers. Foxman must be removed in order to give the ADL legitimacy.
When famous people don't leave the stage at their glory days, and continue to drag until the last days, they ruin the immage they work hard to achieve. In the case of Carter he really believes that he still a president, and that he knows better than BushI,BushII, Clinton and even Regan at the time. I liked James Stewart, and Gregory Peck, they left us with a good taste of their memory, or they never left us. Someone has to tell the old man its time to care for the lady at home, and stick to your good memories of the peace accord, please don't spoil it.
"In a Palestinian sponsored study genetic testing revealed that both the European and Middle Eastern Jews are the closest, genetically speaking, to the Palestinians and both trace their roots back to pre-biblical Israel." Well, no. Genetics is complicated and there are lots of ways to draw wrong conclusions like that. Lots of ideologues who try to point at wrong genetics to support their predetermined positions. European Jews are not very close to Palestinians or to Sephardic Jews unless you focus on the particular markers that are close. They tend to be on average closer to the populations they lived among. But so what? Why should that matter to anybody? Judaism has allowed conversion for a very long time. Why would that be in any way controversial? My blonde, blue-eyed nephew whose mother is a gentile is Jewish. His half-brother whose mother is Japanese is also Jewish. Live with it.
We have this species in Brazil also.It is the philo-communist,pro-moslem,pro-castro invertebrate...In Brazil the worst example is the "foreing minister" amorim(b.t.w,a "marrano"Jewish Name)...In the usa, there are many of those...carter,farrakhan,wright,pflegger,ayers,and a sleuth of others..
In the US, under the Bush administration, anyone who dared to oppose the invasion of Iraq was labeled a terrorist or a traitor. In the entire world, if anyone dares to oppose the land grab that defines Israeli policy - or its illegal occupation - is an anti Semite. Enough. It doesn't work anymore. Carter is NOT anti Israel. He is anti Israeli policy and FOR a just peace in the region. Just stop.
Former President Carter is widely acknowledged to be the worst president in recent memory and has done nothing to dispell that notion.
The problem is not that Carter criticizes Israel, the problem is that he does not criticize the other side. And the problem with those who are defending him is that they (for whatever reason - make your guess) don't understand that his statements are unfair.
Foxman does great damage to Israel. By running around yelling anti-semite at everyone who disagrees with any stupid Likud policy he turns off many Americans who would otherwise be favorably disposed to Israel. President Carter is a great friend of Israel and the only US president to actually bring a significant measure of peace to Israel. But friends don't let friends drive drunk. Netanyahu, Lieberman and company are driving Israel over a cliff. Clinton and Bush aided and abetted these suicidal policies; Carter, a true but realistic friend of Israel, is trying to bring some common sense to the issues and should be praised for it. With friends like Foxman, who needs enemies?
I saw a beautiful piece of land and I wanted to live there. However, someone was already there. I didn't want to share, so I began a systematic elimination of them so I could live there as I wanted. This scenario has played itself out historically. Every country; every land. The world "community" has; and continues to stand by and allow this to happen in MANY countries.
Carter anti Israel because he speaks the truth? Israel is not viable without international support. Israel cannot survive without settling with the displaced. Carter is helping Israel come to terms with its reality on the ground which its leaders are apparently loathe to do. Suck it up! Get on with it! It is long overdue.
President Carter has done a great deal of good for the poor and disadvantaged, in both the US and the world. His contributions to establishing peace between Israel and Egypt were critical and historic. Since leaving office, however, Mr Carter has become critical of Israel and the Jewish people, to the point where his arguments simply cannot be defended as rational. Close Jewish friends and colleagues walked away from the Carter Centre after his recent book, 'Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid'. Somehow, he implied, the Israelis are directly responsible for the Palestinian problem. The Palestinian 'leadership', Mr Carter fails to see, are responsible for their own problems: demonstrating precious little interest in peace, forming the front ranks of Muslim terrorist organisations, and showing about as much love for the Jews as does he. Mr Carter should do what he does best: building homes to shelter the poor, and administering medicines to the sick. A diplomat, he is not.
You cannot revert to from what you never left. He hates the Christ killing Zionists and he should never hide that truth. Blessed he is
That is such old news! I can't believe people are still recycling that silly story that long ago was refuted by genetic testing of the local population in the ME. Even the Palestinians gave that one...the European Jews are not real Jews nonsense...up! In a Palestinian sponsored study genetic testing revealed that both the European and Middle Eastern Jews are the closest, genetically speaking, to the Palestinians and both trace their roots back to pre-biblical Israel. So save the Khazar story which is still popular on KKK, neo-Nazi and many pro-Palestinian websites, not the best sources of information. Plus you spout the laughable dual use of antisemitism another popular antisemitic trait. Hey Lance, your batting a thousand.
I salute Jimmy Carter and honor his words of wisdom. Foxman needs to open his eyes and wake up to Israel's reality.
One of the best & smartest comments ever put up on this site! Thank for speaking the truth!
BOYCOTT ALL CARTER ACTIVITIES AS THEY HURT ALL JEWISH PEOPLE. I used to think Carter was a liberal thinker but the years have proven him to be true to his roots...a self impressed "red neck" anti semitic dirt farmer. NO HERO despite his NOBEL given too quickly....as time has shown him to be a hollow suit...not unlike MAZEN... the only difference between them is MAZEN is openly a hater and denier of the Jewish peoples and Carter is a hide behind the microphone condemner of Jewish people. He is no one's hero, 'cept maybe the beastial PAL/GAZA people who rain rockets down on helpless and innocent Israeli (JEWISH) children...the mossad should consider him an enemy of the Israeli people and treat him accordingly. BOYCOTT ALL CARTER ACTIVITIES AS THEY HURT ALL JEWISH PEOPLE.
Criticisms of Israeli excessses are justified. Israel has abandoned many Western values for the sake of taking Palestinian land and creating turmoil in the Middle East. Then because of this turmoil, Israel overreacts with security precautions that violent the principles of the Geneva Conventions. The just people of today include Carter, Goldstone, Pappe, Finkelstein and many others that speak the truth but are viciously attacked by Israel.
The reality is that Jews of European descent like Abe Foxman are descendants of converts to Judaism from the Khazar Tribe of eastern Europe (who converted to Judaism between the 9th-11th centuries. People like Foxman are not descendants of the ancient Hebrews of the Bible nor of the line of the Prophet Abraham nor do they have any connection to the Middle East except what they have adopted as a result of their conversion to Judaism. The reality is that the Palestinians are direct descendants of the ancient Hebrews who converted to either Islam or Christianity. They are also a Semitic people being persecuted by Israel. As such Israel is the biggest practitioner of anti-Semitism in the world today bar none noteithstanding the ADL's grandstanding reports on the subject that conveniently ignore Israel's acts of anti-Semitism over decades against millions of Palestinian Semitic people. The funniest aspect of this is that European Jews like Foxman are not even of Semitic descent.
Peter, Australian reports like Mr Sheridan of 'The Australia' and I think Mr Bolt form Melbourne spew pro-Israeli reports and they are given free trips to Israel. They dance the piper's tune also. You insult Mr Carter who is pro-Israel and also sought to recognise justice for the Palestinian as well. They do go together. In fact must go together.
Sir, Jews are the source of everything you know about morals. Please think, then shoot
I am not certain whether story or Danny M (No. 1) is the sadder comment or whether they should both be dismissed. The ADL is as one would suppose committed to confronting Defamation against people. To confront ignorant defaming comment against Jews as people is essential. So is calling a people 'terrorist' and 'militant' to be condemned. Mr Carter, like any other right minded person, has a duty to confront behaviour of governments and persons who attack, degrade other people. The state of Israel, Mr Foxman and Danny M from its inception sought to demonise the Palestinians people for the sole purpose of removing them from their land. The Palestinians have sought to prevent this from happening just as the Marquis did in occupied Vichy France and the Partisans did in former Yugoslavia against the Nazi Germans.
It was Arab money($500,000) that help start up the Carter Center, since then he has taken in excess of $20 million dollars in Arab money for his Carter Center. So his opinions are considered bought and paid for by most Americans. I've always found it amusing that his defenders are the loudest critics of AIPAC. Apparently if U.S. politicians take Jewish money from a legal PAC their votes are paid for and not independent, but if Carter takes Arab money he magically stays neutral, as do his opinions. Only taking Jewish money is bad, Taking Arab money is good, the double standard when it comes to Israel is alive and well.
Foxman cannot attack Barack Hussein Obama directly as he would be called racist, and because there are increasing calls for Jews and Israel firsters to pledge loyalty to the US first rather than Israel. In fact the ADL and AIPAC are increasingly being referred to as a fifth column as American foreign and military woes in the middle east are increasingly linked to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and the United States disproportionate support both financially and diplomatic to Israel. Therefore he is attacking Carter in an attempt to again move the conversation that American's are having away from General Patreaus and Secretary Gate's view that American soldiers lives are exchanged for support of Israel, towards one of anti semitism. Which Israel's supporters have traditionally used to stifle all debate and or criticism of Israel. Problem for Foxman is the world and more importantly the American public have cottoned on to this.
is a great, fair and honest man,who has promoted the Egypt-Israel peace treaty and works constantly worldwide to help diminish tension and conflic.
How is it that Carter is "Anti-Israel" when all he is suggesting is peace and the end of land grabbing/ settlement building in the West Bank ?? Jesus Christ people!!! Get a life !!!
He who pays the piper gets the tune.
It appears ADL does not allow anyone to speak truthfully. It appears that ADL has an incorrect concept of the Jews and Israel that they are chosen people and above the laws, moral, ethical, legal or international. Foxman believes Jimmy Cater is a puppet of ADL forgetting the work of bringing the peace between Eqgypt and Israel. It is time that ADL and AIPAC should realise that World has changed, the communication has increased and every step of Israel is judjed by the whole World on daily basis.
Organised religion is crap and every day we see more and more examples of that. Tell you what, Rabbi, instea of making snide comments about Carter, a man who actually tries to do good, why don't you go off and so some good, maybe get a proper job or something.
What one can expect from the person who propped Bin Laden and abandoned dyeing Shah? Betrayal is easy for them...
Paying the piper gets the tune.
Like peanut butter stuck to the roof of ones mouth, Carter's words hold sway over the more ignorant and ill informed. The bigger issue remains why after all these years is Israeli public relations in the world still lacking cohesion, clear purpose, and a loud voice. Maybe that is the lesson and not that we should we surprised he hasn't changed. His words and continuing actions can best be summarized as "Once a peanut farmer always a peanut farmer." Unfortunately, this peanut farmer didn't stay on the farm.
It hard to take the ADL serious while its leader throw daily temper tantrums when Israel is criticized. Bibi's government is pathetic and the ADL should join the chorus of global criticism of Bibi's settlement policy in East Jerusalem. Instead, the ADL is aiding the conflict and giving settlers PR cover to grab more Palestinian land.
Foxman's an idiot or deceitful or possibly both. Carter didn't say 'I'm sorry I have stigmatized, Israel'. He said 'I'm sorry IF I have stigmatzized Israel'. All critics of Israel should be happy to say the latter. I certainly am. But saying you're sorry IF you've unintentionally stigmatized Israel is TOTALLY different to saying that you actually HAVE stigmatized ISrael. This is just Carter being rational, fair-minded and polite and ready to accept his own potential failings. Foxman should try it some time.
to make a opinion about anything Carter has been saying. What I'm really more curious about is why the ADL hasn't put any restraining orders against Nazi Nutjobs from demonstrating in Nazi Regalia at Jewish Synnagogues over here?
They are calling your name Jimmy
Obviously the sole purpose of this institution is to stifle dissent and silence critics of Israel. Very democratic of them. Foxman should remove the "A" from the name of his company.
He still thinks that he can equate criticism of Israel for its politics with prejudice against Jews. No-one believes that propaganda anymore.
Carter has been a politician longer than Obama has been old enough to vote. He knows from experience that Israel has done more than it should to reach out to its neighbors, only to get kicked in the teeth. Israel is tired of being the one to have to bend all the time. Carter should implore the Arab countries to take in the Palestinians if he really wants to see peace. The two-state solution is now just a pipe dream.
