Ambassador Oren rebukes Israel's Jewish critics but calls for new and stronger relationship with U.S. Jewry

It never ceases to amaze me how intolerant the Israel can do no wrong crowd is - support for Israel in the US is at an all time low after blatant interference in our election process. Better think carefully on the next government before all US support vanishes

As the NYRB put it in an article titled The Failure of the American Jewish Establishment, which I read AIPAC, they expected American Jewish youth to check their liberalism at Zionism's door. Instead they did the opposite. J St is now bigger than AIPAC. J St supported Obama and is for a two state solution. As an American, I don't like what I see in our "democratic" ally. First, what do you do for U.S.? Do those bombs falling on Gaza have Made in the USA on them? A protestant, not Evangelical group, has asked for zero military aid to Israel until you clean up your human rights problems. In my opinion we must pressure Israel or you will never STOP the settlements or the occupation, Israeli Arabs being thrown out of their houses, IDF incursions into Gaza. If you were Gazan would you agree to a demilitarized zone? Of course not I'm embarrassed as is Jon Stewart, who gave up his "jewy name" and has enormous influence on American youth, and adults like me, when we the US vote against a Palestinian State, because of you. How long, O lord, how long? And Netanyahu claims he's always ready to talk peace. Yeah, sure.

you confuse entertainment based name calling like "kumbayah liberalleft" with actual analysis. If you and the right continue to substitute easy slander for actual analysis, you will continue to fall short of reality, and the majority of people will continue to disregard what you say.

Because they are part of the Jewish people. When Herzl said we are "A People, One People", he did not distingush between liberals, Orthodox, Chassidim, seculars, saints, sinners, or the great middle ground that most of inhabit from day to day. To say that the ones we don't agree with should be treated like pariahs is arrogance. It says that "We" know so much more than "They", and "We" are so much better than "Them" that we can disregard them as part of our people. It also says that "We" can project our people's flaws on "Them", and as a result, "We" as a people are flawless. I totally agree with you that one should not permit settlers from fulfiling their illiberal and inhumane dreams, but you are kidding yourself if you think they are not part of us. You are also presuming to have the mind of God in assumimg that "We" are completely right in every respect, and "They" are completely wrong in every respect. Life is rarely that simple or clear cut. I don't see how you tikkun olam by turning people with whom you strongly and justly disagree into pariahs. Being firm in the right, not being firmly self rightious, promotes tikkun olam.

If you've actually read Herzl you would know he would be appalled by the present State of Israel. He stood for a liberal state, open to all. He was not a narrow nationalist. And anyhow, he probably preferred Argentina to Palestine.
