Haredi Jews amass in Tel Aviv to celebrate completion of Talmud cycle

I for one am modern orthodox and my children will definitely serve in the army. i will also encourage my children to study talmud every day just as I do. The survival of the Jewish people also depends on Torah study

Daf Yomi is a personal thing people do, and the cycles pre-date the State of Israel. Why do you see things in terms of service to the State - it isn't relevant here. Anyway, the idea of Daf Yomi is to enable people to do other stuff all day, and devote around 45 mins, usually before or after work/army/university/whatever else you do to Torah study.

and, did you know that some of the most illusttrious "founders" of the State said just the opposite. Dr. Judah Magnes, the first president of the Hebrew University, said to effec that a State that rellied solely on the "force of arms" was not worth having, yeah, the first president of the Hebrew University. Not just that, he and Henietta Szold advanced the idea of bi-naitional state at the Peel Commission in 193, and later in 1942.. Then again, you wouldn't want to be bothered by "those Zionists",. only the ones who bear arms. There is another question--are we talkkng about defending Jewish lives, or . . . cannon fodder. Yes, dude, you can learn Torah and fight. The idea, I think is make "shalv bet" available to Haredim, as they make it available to others whose inductions is delayed, or those new immigrants who arrive in the country af an age that they are brought in for a period of a year and a half, and later, do Reserves with everybody else. Your poison will put us back to those "reasons" that we were exiled, the hatred and divisive talk that destroys us from the inside.

I live in a modern orthodox neighbourhood. We have 5 active daily daf yomi groups, and tonight a good number will be celebrating the completion of the cycle together. Daf Yomi is one of the few things which unites thousands of Jews worldwide. It is indeed sad that here in Israel the celebrations are not united, but in the UK and the USA they certainly are.
