U.S. President Barack Obama will receive the Ambassador for Humanity Award from Hollywood director Steven Spielberg at the Shoah Foundation's 20th Anniversary gala, the USC Shoah Foundation announced Friday.

Obama will also be a speaker at the gala on May 7 in Los Angeles.

Spielberg will present the award recognizing the president's efforts to protect human rights as well as his commitment to education and expanding educational technology.

"President Obama's commitment to democracy and human rights has long been felt," Spielberg said in the announcement.

Spielberg established the foundation after making the film Schindler's List, which won seven Oscars in 1994. The foundation collects and preserves video testimonies of survivors and other witnesses to the Holocaust.

The foundation's collection of nearly 52,000 eyewitness testimonies from 58 countries in 34 languages is one of the largest digital collections of its kind in the world.
