Manchester United stars to buy their very first synagogue
Longtime teammates-turned-property-developers Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, plan to purchase Manchester's only center-city shul.
Manchester United soccer icons Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs are set to buy a Synagogue in Manchester, according to a report by the Jewish Chronicle.
The longtime teammates turned property moguls plan to buy and develop Manchester Reform Synagogue, the only synagogue located within the city's center, the report said.
The purchase of the synagogue will be part of a deal to develop a adjacent unused police station which the duo aim to turn into a commercial/residential complex.
The synagogue's president Danny Savage confirmed the plans, but declined to give further details. “Our aim is to deliver a Jewish community center and a synagogue fit for the current generation. Our uniqueness as the only city-center synagogue make it more inclusive a community, predominantly for the Jewish community. Our hope is that it will include meeting spaces, which have been given a lot of thought,” the president said, according to the Chronicle.
The building was constructed in the early 50's, after its predecessor was destroyed by German planes in 1941.
