Funeral set for Brooklyn bar mitzvah boy Samuel Cohen-Eckstein
Twelve year old struck and killed by van as he chased soccer ball near Prospect Park.
A funeral was planned Thursday for Samuel Cohen-Eckstein, the 12-year-old Brooklyn boy who was struck by a van and killed on Tuesday evening while chasing a soccer ball outside his home near Prospect Park.
Popular eighth-grader Cohen-Ecktein, 12, who ran into Prospect Park West Tuesday night, will be remembered at a service at noon at Congregation Beth Elohim on nearby Garfield Place in Park Slope and buried later at Green-Wood Cemetery.
Parents at nearby Middle School 51, which the boy attended, received an email about the death and children were undergoing counseling. A fundraising event was scrapped out of respect.
Cohen-Eckstein was hit by an oncoming 2006 white Chevrolet van, and was crushed by its back tires, the Daily News reported. He sustained severe trauma to the torso and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Methodist Hospital.
The driver was questioned by police, but was not arrested. The NYPD said the investigation was ongoing.
