The chairman of Fox News, Roger Ailes, apologized last week for using the word 'Nazi' to describe executives at National Public Radio.

Ailes sent a written apology over the matter on Thursday to the Anti-Defamation League after he lashed out at the NPR executives who fired a commentator, in an interview with The Daily Beast.

"They are the left wing of Nazism. These guys don't want any other point of view," Ailes said. "They don't even feel guilty using tax dollars to spout their propaganda."

In his letter of apology, Ailes explained that he "was of course ad-libbing and should not have chosen that word."

ADL chairman Abraham Foxman welcomed Ailes' apology as being "as sincere as it is heartfelt."

"Nazi comparisons of this nature are clearly inappropriate and offensive," added Foxman. "While I wish Roger had never invoked that terminology, I appreciate his efforts to immediately reach out and to retract his words before they did any further harm."
