U.S. Jewish voters revolt against Obama

A recent study of American Jewish voters shows that U.S. Jews are angry at Obama's Mideast policies and will most likely vote for someone next elections.

By Jewish Journal and Steven Windmueller Tags: Israel news Barack Obama US Jews

One should not assume that the anger expressed by American voters in recent weeks is somehow limited to a fringe element of this society. While Jews are generally not identified with the Tea Party crowd, there has been a corollary Jewish response these days to the events unfolding in the Middle East and elsewhere. Someone has suggested that this countercultural response could be labeled as a contemporary version of the Maccabees, namely, a revolt against the existing order.

Clearly, the community mobilization in the months following the Gaza flotilla incident has energized significant segments of the American Jewish community. Unlike previous news events involving Israel, this story has served to galvanize many who are particularly upset over how Israel has been depicted by governments, commentators and press reports.

My jewish friends and family members are disappointed in Obama because of the war an Afghanistan, the form of the bank bail-outs and the inadequacy of health care reform. Although they might not contribute as much money or work as hard for him because of the above listed factors, they will certainly vote for him over any likeley Republican. Poll after poll reveal that American Jews rank Israel very low among the factors that influence their votes. This has not changed in the least.

Sen Obama to AIPAC when he wanted Jewish votes, looked us directly in the eye and lied: “Let me be clear . . . Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided.’’ It worked. He lied for votes and got elected. Now he has to deal with a lage number of angry, highly motivated voters working many times as hard for his opponents - and his word now means nothing.

" You can fool some of the Jews some of the time and all of the Jews some of the time but you can't fool all the Jews all the time." It took these voters long enough to see through Obama. Guess he is not the political messiah that they had hoped for !

American Jewish voters live in America

While describing the differences between American and Israeli Jews will always involve a gross over simplification, an argument could be made that Israeli Jews can depend upon the force of arms for their safety. American Jews on the other hand must rely on the rule of law, especially as it regards minorities. I believe that the broad arguments against a Mosque in Manhattan will be more of a motivation to American Jewish voters than the slight differences in foreign policy between Democrats and Republicans. Ross Douthat in an article in the New York Times went so far as to justify past terrorism against American Catholics by stating that their alliance with Catholicism prevented them from being complete Americans. I can't believe that American Jews who children live in America where terrorism against Jews and Jewish institutions has such a strong immediate history, will fill comfortable voting for candidates who do not firmly reject America's past of use of terrorism against its in religious minorities.

There is nothing Obama has done, that he didn't promise to do when he was elected. My worries like most Americans are with jobs. I don't see a magic answer. We are not going to be taking second morgages out on our rapidly appreciating homes again for a long time. I don't see any answers from the republicans on how to get big industry back. It may be gone for good. Americans don't want to compete with Chinese or Indian wages. Now the republicans are attacking government jobs like teaching because of their nice retirement benefits. Jobs like police were never high paying, but one of the attractions was security. We are still in two costly wars without a lot to show for it. The republicans won't alter the course for sure and the democrats are too timid. I hate to see 10% unemolyment the norm. Although, at 17% unemployment in my town, that sounds pretty good. I am not sure when this recession is seriously going to turn around. It doesn't look good.

As a Jew I can say this. The majority of Jews are only concerned with where their next vacation will be, who's the best plastic surgeon for a nose or boob job, where's the best social party so they could be seen at, who's wearing the newest fashions, where to send the kids for summer camp, let's buy a bigger and nicer house than our friends, etc. Israel is a far off place that is inconvenient for them to apologize for. Emanuel and Axelrod along with J Street had informed Obama of this years ago. Maybe the some curious people should google: the jag hunter, and find out the truth behind these people from Chicago.

nobody I know feels this way considering the only other choice is a bunch of Right Wing Relgious Nuts, Racists and Warmongers. The majority of the Republican Party seems to think that the only thing American Jews care about is Israel. that's how they stereotype this. The embrace of the Christian Right by the Israeli Right and Settler Movement is damaging to American Jews.

As one of the few Jews in America that didn't vote for Obama, I say, "What did you expect?" The old adage, "A tiger can't change its stripes" is very accurate when it comes to Obama. The Jews that voted for Obama heard his words of "messiahship," but ignored his outward actions. How can a guy who is so left of center and one of the most liberal senators of all-time, all of a sudden support Israel when he thought Israel was a bully in the first place? What is needed is, for the common Jewish voter (Democrat) to stop listening to the words of politicians, and take note of how his life does not match his words of rhetoric!

Jewish voters, like most other generally liberal groups are dissatisfied with Obama's accomplishments, but not for his attempts at Mideast peace. There will not be a Jewish rush for the Palin crowd, or those who risk tearing the US apart over a building (that isn't a mosque in a place that isn't at ground zero and wouldn't be a problem if it were) because, in part, the next objectionable building might be a synagogue, something Abe should remember.

Last time I checked, Jewish Americans have more influence on US Middle East policy than any group__ make that more than any 3 groups. It might occur to this over privileged group that perhaps they should try encourage and effect a more humane and just pooicy toward Isreal's neighbors. This might just produce intended result. Speak for yourself, Steven Windmueller. I am a ba’al teshuvah American voter. I voted for President Obama in the last election. I remember very clearly the disastrous condition in which Mr. Obama’s immediate predecessor left our country. I am also well aware that the President’s opponents in 2008 were an over-the-hill sellout and a mindless, self-aggrandizing twit. Am I satisfied with President Obama? No. Do I think he is making an honest attempt to rectify our domestic policies? Yes. Do I think he has a lot to learn about our best interests in terms of foreign policy? Yes. Do I think President Obama is chiefly operating in good faith with the American people in general and American Jews in particular? Yes. Given the national mood, American Jews would revolt against ANY President. IMHO, Mr. Obama is not the message; he is the bearer of the message. The message he bears is that the United States is in terrible condition. The principal problem President Obama has is the mismatch between the expectations he fostered and the reality he has to deal with. Am I pissed off at the American Condition? Yes. Am I immature enough to blame it all on Barack Obama? No. No wonder much of the rest of the civilized world considers Americans to be like spoiled children.

Hey Mark absolutely great summary and exactly addresses the true situation in the US. President Obama was elected to further US interests and priorities not those of Israel or Jews!!! Israelis constantly tell anyone else that disagrees with Israeli policies to basically mind their own .....business blah, blah, blah, because(and most especially) because they don't live there...! Well, as an Orthodox Jewish mother with 6 kids and degrees in political theory and as a Canadian living in the US for almost 20 years I definitely will never vote for the GOP or the ultra racist and reactionary Tea Party crowd. You want to correct the deficit? Start with correcting the fact that this country has been at war for 10 years and the GOP refused to make a budget that paid for it! 10 years and passing tax cuts that they don't want to let expire even though they will jack up the debt astronomically. If you're not honest enough to admit that Bush and the GOP wrecked the US economy (which previous republican budget directors recently admitted in several papers) then you can't be taken seriously in a discussion on Obama's policies.

The Democrats are now held hostage by their influence and that's why President Obama can't make any progress towards peace in the Middle East because Jewish representatives in the Democratic Party support Israel's right-wing government.

Israel is a state without fixed borders, having expelled, occupied and oppressed the native population for decades, and, like its best friend, in constant violation of international law. Obama failed to deliver the change he promised, that's why he is out of favor with both the left and the right, Jewish or not

Israel conflict with the palestinians is becoming too complicated for any person to be neutral. It is a problem that lost all its realities and turned so by the palestinians who made it a mixture of all contradicting ideologies & religions etc ..! Too complicated to be solved when 'everything goes'. It is no longer any national problem etc..but it is becoming many problems beyond the boundaries of truth and fanttasy. Those who are genuinely wants peace must not take side but leave the problem for the Israeli & the palestinians between themselves to solve their problem. Any outside interference, mediation & the likewise, has its own interests and add nothing to this problem than making it more complicated & more impossible to solve ! A blood conflict between israel & the palestinian is just doing the same old thing again. it will never be a solution. Something israel will react to it not with anything new ! Time for the palestinians to come with something new ! Such as restudy the past and benefit from it to build the future of their children & the coming palestinian generations ! That must be the duty of the present palestinian generation ! Outside interference, mediation; no more !!

The Tea Party is now mainstream in America incorporating people left of center and people on the right. There is a ground swell of anger here that I have never seen before in America. The protests of the 60's were just a bunch of young people with too many hormones and exaggerated visions of self importance and intellectual capacities. What you see in the Tea party meetings are down-to-earth people who do not have such a low self-esteem as to try to prance around as if they were intellectual giants when in reality they are only intellectual wannabes like in the 60's or now with the people who disparage the Tea Party. (For all of you intellectual giants, "disparage" is NOT a nice word.) The Tea Partiers are for the most part unassuming people who see the decadence and the superficiality of those who voted for Barrack Hussein Obama and they want to reverse everything back to the attitudes of the late 70's or early to late 80's. Those who do not like the Tea Party are now on the fringes in America.

I've been against Barack Obama since one month before he was elected president. Obama voted for that bank bailout, an unfortunate truth that many of his supporters refuse to acknowledge. Even filmmaker Michael Moore omitted that fact from his latest film "Capitalism: A Love Story." Despite inclusion of Jews in his Cabinet and his refusal to sell weapons to Lebanon and Turkey unless they promise not to use them on Israel, we Jews are not fooled. The only real "enemy" these countries have is Israel, and it's because they choose to peg Israel as an enemy. But Obama still has some proving to do before we will be convinced that he has Israel's best interests at heart.

Nonetheless, many decent people see it as an aggression and being totally insensitive. Frankly I think that the Muslims THEMSELVES should renounce building their centre in this location. In doing so, they would earn support and much respect. Not everything which is lawful and consistent with our cherished values is wise.

J Street and the other Jewish left-wing dupes deluded the Obama administration into thinking they had cover to start kicking around Israel in their efforts to appease Islamo-fascism. But it seems those groups weren't all they cracked themselves up to be, and were little more than media creations. Now the Obama administration will reap what they have sown: distrust by Jewish Americans and Christian supporters of Israel, as well as the contempt of Moslem regimes that can smell a spineless, fair-weathered friend a mile away. For all his talk of a new beginning, Obama just got the worst of both worlds. Arabs see the US turning its back on Israel not so much as an opportunity for them (they use Israel as an excuse for their own failures--most share no border with Israel and have little real interest in it beyond PR), as a failure of resolve which will hurt them in their contest with Iran and even with each other. Time for another "reset" button, this time for the Middle East.

Obama and his team invented J-Street so they could claim they were talking to the US Jewish community. J-Street utterings reflects what Obama wants, not the other way around.

Contrast to Judiasm, outcomes only count, you can intend to do the wrong thing, but if in the end your intended outcome was thwarted by chance and you ended up doing the right thing; your a hero! The reason is to encourage doing the right thing, not making up a story of you intended to do the right action but did not. No one is a mindreader and Islam would have you believe intentions, not actions, are paramount. That's what New Yorkers are afraid of, a perverse ideology hiding under a Constitutional sheild.
