A 19-year-old soldier was stabbed Thursday while riding on the lightrail in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Pisgat Ze'ev.
The attacker, who stabbed the young woman moments before the train stopped at the station, fled the scene. The victim was evacuated to Shaare Zedek Medical Center by Magen David Adom rescue services.
Initial reports indicate that the assailant was riding on the train with the soldier, in the direction of Beit Hanina, north of Jerusalem.
Moments before the train stopped at the Yekutiel Adam Street station in Pisgat Ze'ev, the attacker stabbed the soldier in her chest and arm and then fled on foot in the direction of Beit Hanina. Police officials arrived on the scene and began a search and are investigating possible nationalist motives behind the attack.
Dvir Adani, a Hatzolah medic who was one of the first emergency personnel to arrive on the scene, that "the young woman was lying on the platform and not entirely conscious. She couldn't speak clearly, muttering to herself, 'why did this happen to me, of all people?'" Adani, together with other Magen David Adom medics, immediately began resuscitating the young woman.
Yoni Harel, a Magen David Adom paramedic reported that "we restored her fluids and prepared her for immediate evacuation to Shaare Tzedek Medical Center." The soldier, a Jerusalem resident, was admitted to the trauma unit of the hospital.
The police investigation revealed that the ticket seller checked the attacker before he boarded the train, but did not notice that the attacker had a knife in his possession. The attacker sat across from the soldier and stabbed her just as the train was pulling into thestation. As soon as the train door opened he fled the scene, chased by security personnel. The train continued to the Yekutiel Adam Street station, where the woman was given medical attention there.
In response to the incident, Likud MK Danny Dannon said that "this is a classic example of the Palestinian terror culture. We must find the terrorist, and destroy his house." He added: "We must stop the Arab terror running amok in the capital of Israel, before it is too late."
