Israel Police on Alert in Jerusalem, Fearing Terror Attack

Warning comes two days after a 17-year-old resident of the Ramot neighborhood was stabbed by a young Arab man while sitting on the curb near his home.

Israel Police on Monday raised its security alert level in Jerusalem, after receiving warning of a possible terrorist attack. Police reinforcements were stationed throughout the city.

The warning comes two days after a 17-year-old resident of the Ramot neighborhood was stabbed while sitting on the curb near his home. According to an initial police investigation, the suspect is an young Arab who fled the scene of the crime, a fact that lead the police to believe that the attack had nationalist motives.

The Ramot incident occurred several days after a Palestinian woman attempted to stab a settler at a bus station near the West Bank settlement of Gush Etzion. No-one was harmed in the attack.

Tensions have also risen in recent days over reports of Israeli plans to expand settlement construction in East Jerusalem, which it captured in a 1967 war and annexed as part of its capital in a move never recognized internationally.

Palestinians want to make East Jerusalem the capital of a state they seek to establish in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
