Ten Israelis have won Nobel prizes since the state was created in 1948, in a range of fields from chemistry to literature.

Israel celebrated its tenth Nobel laureate on Wednesday as Professor Daniel Shechtman of the Technion in Haifa was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry for his ground-breaking work with patterns in atoms.

To mark the occasion, we take a look at the ten Israelis who have won the highest of international recognition for their efforts, in fields as diverse as economics and the sciences to peace-making and literature.
