Two women in their 40s were killed on Thursday when a passing car struck them as they were crossing a main road in the Haifa suburb of Kiryat Yam.
Paramedics pronounced one of the women dead at the scene of the accident. The other woman was taken to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, where she succumbed to her wounds.
An initial police investigation found that the driver, whose license was suspended in February, hit the two after she lost control of her vehicle and sped through the crosswalk as the light turned red. The driver is suspected of being under the influence of drugs
The offending car flipped over after hitting the women, lightly injuring one of the passengers.
On Wednesday, a 23-year-old woman was killed when the car she was riding in slammed into another. The driver of her car was seriously injured, and a woman and her 10-month-old baby in the second car sustained light injuries.
Police suspect that the driver of that car, whose license had been revoked, had consumed alcohol prior to the accident.
Also Wednesday, a 23-year-old resident of the northern town of Dir Hana was killed when his car slammed into a tree.
