French First Lady Carla Bruni reached out to her Israeli counterpart, Sara Netanyahu, telling her in a personal letter that she shared Israel’s hope for the release of captive Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit.
In a letter delivered to Netanyahu on Thursday, Bruni said that France was working as hard as possible to mediate Shalit's release.
The first lady was responding to a letter sent to her by Netanyahu, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered to French President Nicolas Sarkozy during his recent visit to France.
“I write to you not only as the wife of a prime minister to the wife of a president, but also as a mother to a mother,” Netanyahu wrote to Bruni, not yet knowing the French first lady, who is already a mother to a young boy from a previous relationship, was also expecting another child.
“I hope that you can find some way to help Israel in its efforts to free our kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit,” Sara Netanyahu wrote.
"Like you, I wish with all my heart that this episode will be over soon," Bruni wrote back to Netanyahu.
