In an all-Ramat Gan clash this week at the final of the annual national mixed pairs, Chaim Schneider and Sari Fridman beat Mazal Reuven and Barney Zuckerman 21-15. The winning pair at the Ramat Gan club had to fight off their challengers after taking a big lead.
Both Schneider and Fridman displayed unmatchable bowling to lead 19-5 after 12 ends. Then thunder struck. Reuven held one shot and attempted to drive the jack back to her cluster of bowls, but failed. Schneider followed with the same purpose to find his group of back bowls. He was dead on target but the jack went its own way, springing up to land at Reuven's group of bowls for a count of six and for the score at 19-11.
Reuven and Zuckerman sprang to life, and with the latter drawing accurately on long heads, the pair won the next four ends to close the gap to 19-15 with two ends to play. Schneider, however, steadied the boat and held off his opponents to win singles in the last two ends for the 21-15 win.
In previous rounds, Reuven and Zuckerman had excellent wins against Ramat Gan's Rami Oron and Naomi Ziv, and against last year's winners Dror and Edna Zomberg. Schneider and Fridman also did well to beat Ra'anana's Zvika Hadar and Hadassah Fisher.
