Ra'anana went home with top honors in both the men's and women's Northern Pairs tournament concluded on the weekend at Haifa.
In both cases it was Haifa teams who came out on the losing end.
For the women, Denny Galland paired with Beverley Polatinsky won their four preliminary rounds with combined consistency to reach the final. Polatinsky was in grand style at lead with Galland regularly there to add the finishing touches. In their final against Tova Libman and Noga Bachrach scores were fairly even until the 12th end when Ra'anana led 10-9, but followed then to lead 15-9 and to end in fine form at 18-12.
Israel's international pairing of Colin Silberstein and Yair Bekier won their final against Yossi Greenberg and Yakov Josefson, but their path to the final was one of fighting finishes. It was 12-all after 13 ends which then saw the Ra'anana pair sweep past their opponents to win the last 5 heads for a well deserved 23-12 win.
But their semifinal win against Ramat Gan's Yair Lierberthal and Micha Farkash was won with a dramatic finish. Ramat Gan had led throughout the game and were ahead 20-15 with 3 ends to play. Silberstein in the next end trailed the jack to his two back woods, and then drew in two more for a count of four to trail 19-20. Two more in the penultimate 17th end saw Ra'anana start the last end with a one-shot advantage, then finishing off with a two for a final excellent 23-20 win.
