Thousands of concerned citizens called the police on Monday after alarms emitting the wailing sound usually used to signal an impending attack sounded across Israel, including in Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ofakim, Kiryat Malachi, Ginot Shomron, Hatzor, Tiberias, Carmiel and Afula.
The IDF said that no rocket launches were detected and that it is investigating the technical error. Home Front Command is also investigating whether the malfunction was due to a problem with the sirens or originated in the detection system designed to identify rockets after they are launched.
In March last year, a malfunctioning siren sent hundreds of thousands of residents of the greater Tel Aviv area, the northern coastal plain, Acre and Carmiel into their bomb shelters.
The Home Front Command said the approximately minute-long mishap was due to a problem with the detection system.
