A Palestinian man was shot and killed close to midnight on Monday at Tapuach Junction in the West Bank.

The incident began when the Palestinian opened fire with a hand gun on a Border Police soldier manning a checkpoint at the junction, wounding him lightly in the leg, according to a military source.

Border Police and Israel Defense Forces soldiers at the scene returned fire, killing the Palestinian.

The wounded soldier was evacuated to Beilinson Hospital in Petach Tikva where his condition was described as light to medium. He is fully conscious.

Chief of Staff Benny Gantz arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting, along with a sizeable IDF force.

The incident was the second shooting in less than a week at the junction in the Shomron. A 19-year-old Palestinian was arrested there last Friday, after being discovered wearing a suicide vest.
