Killed in Qassam strike in Ashdod
Irit Sheetrit was killed by a Qassam rocket in late December at the beginning of Operation Cast Lead in her hometown of Ashdod. She is survived by her husband and four children.
Hundreds attended her funeral despite fears that additional rockets might fall on the throngs who came to pay Irit Sheetrit their last respects. Her son Tal, reminiscing about his mother, said: "Every night before she went to bed, she would comfort me, even when I was asleep." Ilana Azran, Irit Sheetrit's mother, recalled sitting in front of the television every year on Memorial Day and breaking into tears over the memory of those who had died.
"I never believed, she said, "that it would strike me. Every day for me is Memorial Day. Every hour and second I think about my special daughter."
