Man charged with murder apparently shot the wrong man 13 times

Two indictments were filed on Sunday, for murder and manslaughter, crimes which the courts suspect were the result of mistaken identity.

Walid Mazaro, 46, and Mansur Hashima, 30, were charged with having conspired to murder Yossef Alitawi in January 2004 over a dispute between him and Mazaro. They were also charged with killing Ahmed Da'ar Said, who was staying at Alitawi's house as a guest.

Mazaro, a resident of the village of Anata north of Jerusalem, was charged with murder. His accomplice Hashima, a resident of the nearby Shuafat refugee camp, was charged with manslaughter.

According to the indictments, Mazaro and Alitawi had gotten into a dispute at the end of 2003, prompting Mazaro to ask Hashima and another man, Nabil Dabai, to help him shoot Alitawi. The two agreed, and planned to ambush the target outside his home. Hashima was to cut the power supply and wait for Alitawi to come outside to check the fuse box. The three agreed that when Alitawi came out, Mazaro would shoot him.

The indictment goes on to say that both Mazaro and Dabai were carrying weapons at the time of the shooting, and Hashima had taken an ax with which to cut the electrical wires. The three headed out to Alitawi's home in Shuafat.

However, according to the indictment, it was Said that came outside to check the fuse box, and Mazaro, thinking he was Alitawi, shot him 13 times, killing him.

The murder was solved after Dabai turned state's witness and incriminated Mazaro and Hashima.
