Public Security Minister Avi Dichter (Tess Scheflan / Jini) Last update - 00:02 06/07/2008 Dichter: Kadima's committment to public is to replace Olmert By Haaretz Service Tags: Avi Dichter, Kadima  Public Security Minister Avi Dichter on Saturday declared that Kadima's "commitment" to the public was to replace Prime Minister Ehud Olmert with a new leader. Speaking in an interview with Channel 2, Dichter said: "Olmert is trying to extend his tenure as prime minister through maneuvers and the exploitation of party regulations." The prime minister has agreed to the holding of primaries following a corruption investigation against him in which he is suspected of illicitly accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from an American fundraiser. Advertisement Dichter added that primaries are meant to determine who will replace the prime minister, and yet it is still unclear whether Olmert himself will contend or not. "I believe that the decision between the Kadima and Labor parties on the date of the primaries and the understanding within Kadima about the moral aspect of this whole affair compels us to replace the prime minister," the minister further said, referring to labor chairman and Defense Minister Ehud Barak's threat to force general elections unless Kadima expedites its party primaries. In the interview, Dichter also referred to the news conference he held on Wednesday while initial reports of the terror attack in Jerusalem were emerging, over which he has been harshly criticized. "There was a mistake for which I am sorry, but to attribute to me inappropriate personal behavior ? these are baseless statements and the subject is being taken care of," Dichter said. Following the news conference, MKs and ministers called on Olmert to fire Dichter. Senior Kadima sources charged that, "instead of going to the scene and performing his job, he occupied himself with politics.
