PHILADELPHIA - A foundation created by filmmaker Steven Spielberg is giving $1 million to the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.

The money from the Righteous Persons Foundation will go toward a new, five-story museum building being built in the city's historic section.

Spielberg helped establish the Righteous Persons Foundation in 1994 after directing his Oscar-winning Holocaust film, Schindler's List, which tells the true story of a non-Jewish factory owner who saved Jews during the Holocaust.

According to the foundation's website, Spielberg remarked upon donating $53 million to launch the new foundation that he "could not keep the money profited from the movie because it was blood money."

The Philadelphia museum was established in 1976 and is dedicated to telling the story of the American Jewish experience. It is constructing the new building in hopes of raising its profile and increasing the number of visitors. The new museum is set to open in 2010.

According to the museum's Website, the brand-new 100,000 square-foot facility will feature five floors of interactive exhibition space as well as one of the nation's largest collections of Jewish Americana.
