Senior officers laud response to bulldozer frenzy
By Jonathan Lis

Senior Jerusalem police officers are pleased with the way the police forces conducted themselves during Wednesday's chase and takeover of the bulldozer driven by a terrorist on the capital's Jaffa Road.

The police's improved performance was particularly noticeable when compared with their conduct during the attack on the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in March, when officers opted to wait outside the building, allowing the terrorist to continue his killing spree.

The officers involved in Wednesday's incident were keen to point out during interviews that they had "sought to make contact" with the terrorist, professional jargon for taking the offensive. Police sources have said that the negative Mercaz Harav experience prompted major changes in the way terrorist incidents are approached.

Meanwhile, in the autopsy carried out on the corpse of the terrorist, six or seven bullet wounds were identified. Two of the shots were fired by Eli Mizrahi, the officer who was on a motorized counter-terrorist patrol. Three shots were fired by an off-duty soldier who passed by on a bicycle. Two other shots are believed to have been fired by a policewoman, Elinor Nahum, 22, who was crowned "hero of the day" by the police.

Nahum's bullets hit the terrorist in the head, and this caused him to lose consciousness for a few minutes before recovering and trying to continue his rampage.

Nahum had been posted on Jaffa Road with her partner, Shadi Dau, and the two provided security for the work currently underway in the street on the city's light rail network. "Suddenly we saw the bulldozer being driven like crazy and hitting the bus," Nahum recounted yesterday.

"At first we thought it was a traffic accident," continued the policewoman. "Only when we saw it reversing and hitting the bus again we realized that it was a terrorist attack. I noticed that he was heading toward Shadi, and was sure he had been killed. I fired two shots and saw the terrorist fall in the bulldozer's [cabin]. Then I saw Shadi, and realized he was alive. I was sure the terrorist had been neutralized, and that is why I rushed to the bus to rescue civilians trapped there."
