Police fear wave of violence against Arabs in wake of Jerusalem attack
By Jonathan Lis, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: terror attack, Israel

Immediately after Palestinian from East Jerusalem plowed down a central Jerusalem street in a bulldozer on Wednesday, killing three people, Jerusalem police sent reinforcements to the terrorists's Zur Baher neighborhood due to concerns violence could erupt in the area.

Hussam Duwiyat, 30, was shot dead by security forces on Wednesday after stealing a bulldozer from the construction site where he was working and ramming into a bus and a number of cars on Jaffa Street in downtown Jerusalem, killing the three Israelis and wounding dozens.

District commander Aharon Franko instructed police to suppress signs of mourning in the village and prohibit symbols of the Palestinian Authority, Hamas or Palestinian nationalism altogether. Police were also ordered to prevent the erection of a mourning tent.

District police officers were quick to enforce those orders on Thursday and instructed the bulldozer driver's family to take down its mourning tent.

Based on past experience specific intelligence tips, the police are preparing to prevent violence by local Zur Baher residents as well as clashes with right-wing activists who could come to Zur Baher to protest the terror attack. Extreme rightists asked the police on Thursday for a permit to march to the Duwiyat's home, but police have not granted it.

The activists said Thursday they planned to hold the march with or without a police permit. Police were concerned about losing control over the marchers, as occurred three months ago when a right-wing demonstration overflowed from Jerusalem's Armon Hanatziv promenade into the neighborhood of the perpetrator of a terror attack at the city's Mercaz Harav yeshiva, in which eight were killed.

Demonstrators damaged homes, cars and property in Jabel Mukaber, where the perpetrator of the Mercaz Harav attack was from.

Because the perpetrators in the Jaffa Road and Mercaz Harav attacks were East Jerusalem residents, Vice Premier Haim Ramon suggested on Thursday that the separation fence route be changed, leaving those two villages outside Jerusalem to the east. Ramon told Army Radio that Israel should treat the neighborhoods as Palestinian villages, and revoke the permanent residency status of their residents.

"One of the main reasons the attack was carried out yesterday with such ease was because there are Palestinian villages that for some reason are called Jerusalem - Jabel Mukaber and Zur Baher. They need to be treated as we treat Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jenin and Nablus," Ramon told Army Radio.
