Supreme Court president: Our justices are the target of incitement

Supreme Court President Dorit Benisch on Thursday hinted that the current state of turmoil over the court's authority was reminiscent of the period of incitement just before then-prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, was assassinated.

Benisch made the comparison during an inaugural ceremony for 13 new Supreme Court justices, at the President Residence in Jerusalem.

Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann considered Benisch's adversary over the reforms he has been trying to implement in the justice system, was also present at the ceremony.

"Unfortunately, day after day and hour after hours, different sources are trying to lower the public's faith in the justice system, to harm the honor of the judges and even to incite against them," Beinisch said. "Israeli democracy has paid an expensive price."

"Amidst the campaign to harm Israel's justices, there have been not small number of tendentious attempts to describe the community of justices as people who enjoy vacation, as people who don't dedicate most of their time to work," Beinisch said. "Don't listen to these voices. They are based on deceiving and misleading information. The reality is far from this description."

Friedmann has during his tenure criticized the Supreme Court on a number of levels, including characterizing the justice system as containing two Supreme Courts - the one that existed during the state's first four decades, and the court of the past 20 years. The first court exercised self-restraint, he has said, but the second is overly involved in controversial issues.
