Dichter speech at time of Jerusalem attack raises ministers' ire

Public Security Minister Avi Dichter convened a press conference on Wednesday to criticize the functioning of the Kadima Party, of which he is a member, while a terror attack was being carried out in Jerusalem. This move sparked the outrage of his fellow ministers and prompted them to demand his immediate dismissal.

The press conference was scheduled for noon, and despite the fact that a Palestinian assailant had just rammed a bulldozer into a string of vehicles in downtown Jerusalem, killing at least three people, the press conference went ahead as planned.

Dichter, the minister in charge of Israel's police force, told reporters at the press conference that "any maneuver aimed at bringing about the reelection of [Prime Minister Ehud] Olmert as the leader of Kadima would be misleading for Kadima members, our partners in the coalition and the Israeli public."

Ministers and MKs approached the Prime Minister's office later Wednesday demanding that Dichter be immediately dismissed in light of his remarks. Senior Kadima members described Dichter as a "robot who shot himself in the head and is concerning himself with politics rather than going out into the field."

At the press conference, Dichter harshly criticized Olmert and said that if he were to lead Kadima into the next elections, Kadima would no longer be the ruling party.

The public security minister added that the possibility that the Kadima bylaws could be changed so that the party primaries would determine not only who the party leader is, but also who his deputy would be, is a "misleading move."

He added that the primaries should focus on finding a substitute for Olmert as the head of Kadima, a leader that would put together the next coalition.

Under a coalition saving deal with Labor Chairman Ehud Barak, Olmert has promised to hold party primaries no later than September 25.
