Education Min. proposes plan to curb violence against civil servants

Education Minister Yuli Tamir on Tuesday said that she will present a plan to curb violence against civil servants - including teachers, principals, social workers and doctors - at the next weekly cabinet meeting.

"If a parent who attacks a teacher is jailed, this violence will stop," said Tamir, while attending the education committee of the teachers' union in Tel Aviv. "There is a need for harsher sentences to deter such actions."

The education minister's proposal recommends that the government, police and justice system give preference to cases involving violence against public servants.

The plan comes in the wake of two violent incidents on Monday.

In the first case, the father of a student at Netanya's Moreshet Zevulun School headbutted the principal at an end-of-year event, apparently in reaction to the school's treatment of his daughter.

The principal, who suffered injuries to her face, was taken to Laniado Hospital for treatment. The suspect later gave himself up to police, who were to request on Tuesday that his remand be extended.

Yair Dukov, head of the school's parent committee, said on Monday that he takes this incident very seriously and hopes the police will enforce the law in the harshest way possible. "We have to be thankful this didn't end in a worse fashion," said Dukov.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's adviser on social affairs, Vered Swid, met with the principal to offer her support after the attack. "We must vigorously denounce this type of violence," said Swid.

In the second incident Monday, the office of Jedida's elementary school principal was torched before dawn. Principal Hassan Hareinu was awakened Monday at 4 A.M. by neighbors, who saw flames and smoke rising from the school in the village, which is near Acre.

Firefighters and police said a firebomb had been thrown into the principal's office.

Hareinu said he had no idea who could have set the fire. The students had finished the school year last week with several activities and celebrations.

"I cannot imagine who would do something so heinous. We will continue preparing for the next school year. I hope the parents, the local council and everyone in the village will denounce what happened," he said.

Acre police commander Avi Adi said the police were investigating whether the perpetrators targeted the principal for personal reasons.
