Police: Officer who shot himself during Sarkozy farewell definitely committed suicide

The Border Police officer who shot himself during the departure ceremony at Ben-Gurion Airport for French President Nicolas Sarkozy last week definitely committed suicide, determined the police investigative commission appointed to study the matter.

The commission presented its findings to Police Commissioner David Cohen on Monday. The commission also made recommendations on professional matters concerning joint procedures between the police and the Shin Bet security service in emergency situations, based on conclusions from what transpired at the airport.

The policeman shot himself dead last Tuesday 200 meters from where Sarkozy was getting ready to board a plane ending his trip to Israel. Bodyguards initially feared it may have been an assassination attempt, and rushed Sarkozy into the plane alongside his wife Carla Bruni.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Shimon Peres, who came to bid farewell to the French president, were likewise hurried into their bullet-proof vehicles until the origin of the gunshot was determined.

Border Police officials said the man, a member of the Druze community, had served as a border policeman for eight years since he was discharged from mandatory service in the Israel Defense Forces. His family asked media not to publish his name.
