Last update - 22:40 30/06/2008 Human remains discovered in Golan, possibly of missing soldier By Eli Ashkenazi, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Guy Hever, IDF, Golan, Israel Israel Defense Forces troops discovered during routine training in the folds of the Golan Heights on Monday a human skull and the remains of a human skeleton. The skull and the partial skeleton were discovered in an area where the thick vegetation had been burned in a brush fire some two weeks ago, exposing the human remains. After the bones were found, the soldiers notified the Golan police. Officers arrived at the scene under the command of station Chief Superintendent Meni Binyamin. A forensic team was also summoned. The skull and bones were taken to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Abu Kabir. Advertisement According to Superintendent Binyamin, it was not immediately apparent how long the remains had been there. However, he added, "this is not a body that has been there a short time. It could have been there ten years or even 50 years." Over recent years, several human remains have been found in the Golan Heights, all of which have been ultimately identified as the remains of Syrian fighters. However, the spot where the skull and skeleton were found Monday corresponds with the area where past searches were conducted in efforts to locate IDF soldier Guy Hever, who went missing in 1997. Hever's base is located nearby. However, no items that could have belonged to the soldier, such as a gun, tags, shoes or clothing were found in proximity to the remains. The police said they hope the teeth that survived the fire will assist in identifying the remains. Rina Hever, the mother of the missing soldier, said following the discovery of the skeleton that "this is not Guy's body, Guy disappeared in a different place, closer to the Syrian border."
