Livni, Mofaz jockey for support ahead of primaries in Kadima

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz, the two leading candidates for the leadership of the ruling Kadima party, have been active in lobbying for support from within the faction.

Livni has thus far received the endorsement of Environment Minister Gideon Ezra, her deputy in the Foreign Ministry, Majali Wahabi, and Kadima MKs Yitzhak Ben Yisrael, Shlomo Molla, and Amira Dotan.

Mofaz, on the other hand, is struggling to rally public support. MK Ze'ev Elkin is the only parliamentarian to this point who has pledged to back his candidacy. Meir Nitzan, the mayor of Rishon Letzion and the chairman of the Kadima council, announced he would back Mofaz.

Ever since last week's late-night agreement between Labor and Kadima, in which the former agreed not to support the dissolution of the Knesset in exchange for the latter's agreement to move up party primaries, both ministers have been actively seeking Kadima members' support.

Many in the faction are awaiting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's decision whether he will run in the primaries. Kadima is expected to convene on Monday to formally approve the agreement with Labor.
