Tenis / Wimbledon / Peer faces Dementieva in bid to reach semis
By Haaretz Sports Staff

Shahar Peer faces Elena Dementieva of Russia in the fourth round at Wimbledon today, knowing that victory over the fifth-seeded Russian will push her back up the world rankings after a poor start to 2008 saw her drop to 26th in the WTA rankings.

Peer has already done her ranking - and her confidence - a world of good, progressing to this stage with two straight-set victories followed by an epic three-setter against Dinara Safina on Saturday. (See related story).

But if Safina was running on empty on Saturday, Peer's opponent today will be fired up for the encounter.

Dementieva - who is ranked fifth in the world - was a runner-up at the U.S. Open in 2004, when she lost an all-Russian final to Svetlana Kuznetsova. She reached the quarterfinal of the French Open last month, where she lost to none other than Safina, despite reaching match point in the second set.

In terms of head-to-head result, Dementieva has a clear advantage, having won three of the four matches between the two women - including a humiliating 6-2, 6-0 demolition in the second round of the Australian Open, which lasted less than an hour.

If Peer does win, she will face her fourth Russian opponent of the tournament - the winner of the match between 21st-seed Nadia Petrova and Alla Kudryavtseva.

Double jeopardy

And when she's done with Dementieva, Peer has to turn her attention almost immediately back to Safina, when the two women meet again to complete a doubles match they did not have time to finish on Saturday. Peer and her Belarusian partner, Victoria Azarenka, are already one set up over Dementieva and Agnes Szavay of Hungary, and will be looking to complete the job in relatively speedy fashion.

In the men's doubles, meanwhile, Andy Ram and Yoni Ehrlich - who already have the Australian Open crown to their names this season - will play French duo Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut on Court 14. Ram and Ehrlich - who made it to the semifinal at Wimbledon in 2003 - are seeded third for this year's tournament.

All of the Israelis' games will be broadcast live on one of the sports channels - with Sport 5, Sport 5+ and 5+ Live all carrying extensive coverage from southwest London.
