News in Brief

A High Court of Justice ruling this week is likely to undermine Shas' efforts to ensure the appointment of the son of movement spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, as Jerusalem municipal rabbi. Shas has cited control over city rabbi appointments as a key reason the party stays in the Olmert coalition.

In a response to a petition by Jerusalem opposition council members Nir Bareket and Uri Ariel, the court ordered Minister for Religious Services Yitzhak Cohen to "abstain from any measure to appoint municipal rabbis according to new regulations" which Cohen published six months ago.

Bareket and Ariel argued that despite changes, the new regulations are still unconstitutional, and they demanded the rabbi appointments not be made until after November city elections. They also demand that army service be a prerequisite to serving in the position. (Yair Ettinger)

Firefighters extinguished a massive blaze that injured ten at the Orchid Hotel in Eilat yesterday. Among the injured were nine hotel employees, four of whom were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and one firefighter. The fire erupted in bushes adjacent to a luxury suite and spread to the surrounding woods.

Firefighters arrived on the scene quickly and connected their hoses to the hotel pool.

Although the fire has been extinguished, rescue personnel, including firefighters and police, remained at the scene late into the evening, searching the surrounding woods for additional hotspots. (Revital Levy-Stein)

WASHINGTON - Speaking yesterday at the first annual lecture in memory of Haaretz journalist Zeev Schiff, held at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, former Israel Defense Forces chief of staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak said that although Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "have had some very good meetings," the general public still distrusts the peace process.

Shahak expressed doubts that a Palestinian Authority led by Fatah's Abbas could implement a peace deal with Israel after Fatah's electoral loss and loss of control of the Gaza Strip. Shahak said the PA must introduce law and order in the territory under its control before any deal can have a future. (Shmuel Rosner)
