Greens sue to derail Ashkelon power plant
By Avi Bar-Eli
Tags: ashkelon, green party

The Green Party sued the government and Israel Electric Corporation Wednesday at the High Court of Justice, hoping the court would halt the progress on a coal-fired power plant in Ashkelon.

The environmentally minded party also named the National Infrastructures Committee in its lawsuit to obtain a temporary halt-work injunction. Among other things, the Green Party is asking the court to force the state to obtain permits from the Health Ministry and the Environmental Protection Ministry to the construction plan, and to properly look into alternative fuel sources instead of coal.

Coal is the cheapest form of fuel for a power plant these days, but it's also considered the most environmentally dirty, and unhealthy, too.

The Greens claim that in approving the new plant last week, the National Infrastructures Committee simply ignored the fact that the plant is going up on the coast, which would require it to obtain a permit from the Committee for Preserving the Coastal Environment.

Also, building a coal-fueled plant in Ashkelon will be bad for the health of the city residents, the party writes, adding, "It is unconscionable that while the Health Ministry and Environmental Protection Ministry oppose the plant's construction, other ministries are simply ignoring the health of thousands of citizens.."
