Reputed crime boss Abutbul can't find representation after his lawyer is murdered

A reputed underworld kingpin, whose lawyer was murdered two weeks ago in a car explosion, has been unable to find an attorney to represent him.

The Tel Aviv Court has advised Asi Abutbul, who is on trial with 23 other defendants for organized crime activities and extortion, that unless he finds another attorney soon, he would be tried separately from the other suspects.

Yoram Haham, a criminal attorney, was killed when an explosive device detonated in his car as he was driving down Yigal Alon Street in Tel Aviv.

A representative of the Abutbul family told the court yesterday that no lawyer would agree to represent Abutbul in three months time as the court demanded, due to the complex case.

The court said it did not want to delay the other defendants' trial, and would consider separating their trial from Abutbul's. The prosecution objected.

The court asked Abutbul to let it know whether he found an attorney by next Wednesday, and to examine the possibility of resuming his trial in six months.

At this point, Abutbul's brother Francois interrupted and told the court: "He deserves a retrial...no lawyer will take this case, not even in a year. It is impossible to study the material."
