News in Brief

Austrian public prosecutors will investigate again whether a 95-year-old Nazi-era war crimes suspect is fit for trial, the Austrian justice minister said yesterday. So far, Austria has refused to extradite Milivoj Asner to Croatia, saying he is unfit to testify or face trial after court-appointed experts found him senile. Croatian-born Asner is charged with helping deport Jews, Gypsies and Serbs to World War II concentration camps. In an interview with the British daily Sun published last week, Asner seemed lucid as he denied wrongdoing and said he wanted to prove his innocence in a Croatian court. (DPA)

Social workers representatives asked Prime Minister Ehud Olmert yesterday to intervene to end the work dispute and sanctions that have been ongoing for two and a half months. Some 7,000 social workers are employed by the state, and they are demanding an additional 1,000 positions to ease the load placed on their shoulders. Olmert told the cabinet a month ago that he is aware of the burden, and that the number of cases each worker is responsible for is unreasonable. However, no progress has been made since then, according to the head of the social workers organization, Yitzhak Peri. (Ruth Sinai)

From now until the November municipal elections, the Interior Ministry has banned local authorities from hiring new employees, or improving the employment conditions of current workers. The new rules were sent to municipalities on Tuesday by the ministry's director general, and are intended to prevent the use of municipal resources for election purposes. The hiring freeze includes temporary or replacement workers, but will not apply to "critical" workers budgeted by the education and welfare ministries, such as school principals. (Yigal Hai)

Former MK Omri Sharon was released yesterday after serving four months in prison. Sharon left the Ma'asiyahu prison at mid-day, and his brother Gilad was waiting for him. He refused to speak to the media. Sharon had his 7-month sentence cut by a third for good behavior, and was considered a model prisoner, causing absolutely no trouble. He was convicted of violating election funding laws, fraud and perjury for acts committed during the campaign of his father, Ariel Sharon, in the 1999 Likud primaries. (Jonathan Lis)

Yariv Peretz, 26, from Kiryat Shmona was sentenced yesterday to seven years in prison for drug smuggling. The Nazareth District Court sentenced the former professional soccer player, who was caught this year smuggling three kilograms of heroin into Israel from Lebanon, along with a friend. Peretz's sports career ended when he was injured in a motorcycle accident, but after he completed rehabilitation he lost his motivation to play, and fell into a life of drugs three years ago. The Gay Pride Parade, scheduled to take place in the center of Jerusalem today, is expected to proceed without any major protests, as opposed to previous years. The police and the Jerusalem Open House for Pride and Tolerance spoke with the ultra-Orthodox before the parade this year. Only 2,000 police officers are expected to provide security this year, about 10,000 less than last year. However, an ultra-Orthodox demonstration is scheduled to take place at the same time in the city's Mea Shearim neighborhood. The parade will use mostly side streets, far from neighborhoods with large numbers of opponents. It will start around 4 P.M. at Independence Park. (Jonathan Lis)
