Major role for private interests in star-studded President's Conference
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10

Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for June 25, 2008.

If you thought that the president's office organized last month's Presidents Conference, you thought wrong.

The conference brought to Jerusalem dozens of political and business leaders from around the world, and was presented as a production headed by President Shimon Peres. But the president's office actually played no role in its organization.

That fact also surprised the state comptroller's office, which is compiling a report on the organization of the star-studded event. But because it was organized almost entirely by the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute, it can't be investigated by the comptroller.

In response, the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute said that it is a non-profit proprietary limited company that operates under full transparency and that its budget undergoes regular examination and oversight. It also said that the President's Conference staff operated from within the institute's offices, and that part of the funds transferred by the President's Conference to the institute covered employment costs for workers from both offices.

According to the response, none of the institute's employees received additions to their salaries beyond regular monthly wages, and the budget presented in this feature was a preliminary proposal that was later amended.
