'Attack on Paris Jewish teen may be linked to ongoing gang feud'
By Haaretz Service
Tags: anti-Semitism, France, Paris

French police are investigating the possibility that the brutal attack on a Jewish teenager last week in Paris was not an isolated anti-Semitic incident, as initially thought, but rather the result of ongoing gang between youth of North African and Jewish descent, Le Monde reported on Wednesday.

Police on Tuesday opened a probe into the incident, which left 17-year-olf Rudy Hadad unconscious and in a coma for three days.

"The anti-Semitic circumstances are unquestionable," Paris prosecutor Jean-Claude Marin told reporters on Tuesday, adding that insults such as "dirty Jew" were used.

The issue now remains as to whether the attack was an isolated incident.

The neighborhood in which the attack took place, in the 19th Arrondissement of Paris, has been the site of numerous youth scuffles between the two ethnic groups in recent weeks.

Police officers have confirmed that Hadad was already known to authorities and reprimanded for past legal violations. On December 9, he was arrested after a youth fight and has since been on court watch and had been slated to appear before a Paris judge on Tuesday.

According to an initial investigation, Hadad's friends fled the scene of the attack the moment Hadad was beaten. Five youths were detained after the attack and the public prosecutor's office recommended that they be formally questioned about their role.
