World Wealth Report: People in Israel get richer faster
By Michal Ramati, TheMarker Correspondent
Tags: merrill lynch

The number of millionaires in Israel grew twice as fast as the rate in any other country in 2007 according to the 11th annual Merrill Lynch / Capgemini World Wealth Report published Tuesday.

The number of millionaires in Israel jumped 13.6 percent, up 1,000 people to a total of 8,200 millionaires. The number of multi-millionaires grew 12 percent in Israel to 97 individuals.

The number of high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) in the world grew by 6 percent to reach 10.1 million people, and their wealth increased by 9.4 percent to total $40.7 trillion. The number of multimillionaires worldwide increased last year by 8.8 percent to 103,320 individuals. The average worth of HNWI's assets crossed the $4 million mark for the first time.

The data that appears in the report is gathered through macro-economic figures that reflect the division of wealth within countries in accordance with a model that was developed in the 1980s by Capgemini and Merrill Lynch. Rather than individually gathered data, the report includes data collected from governments, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, among others, regarding division of wealth and worth of assets.

A millionaire is defined in the report as someone who has at least $1 million in liquid assets, not including real estate investments. A multimillionaire is defined as someone who has at least $30 million in bank accounts.

Sigal Shapira, the director of private banking at Merrill Lynch Israel said that the impressive growth among Israeli millionaires, which is twice the global average, stems among other things from the wealth garnered by share holders in Israeli companies. According to Shapira, these people took advantage of Israel's financial markets to garner large capital revenues and amass large amounts of cash surpluses.
