Basketball / CSKA signs Morris as player exodues enters full swing
By Haaretz Staff

CSKA Moscow yesterday announced it had signed ex-Maccabi Tel Aviv man Terrence Morris, the latest player to leave the Israeli team in what seems to be turning into an exodus of those players that were part of last season's failed campaign.

Officials of the Russian team, coached by U.S.-born Israeli coach David Blatt, said the American forward signed a three-year contract for 2.6 million euros per season.

"This past season shows what a great player Terrence Morris is," Andrei Vatutin, CSKA's senior vice president, said. "I'm happy CSKA beat out the competition to acquire his services, as he was clearly sought after by every major team on the continent. I'm very happy he accepted our offer."

Two of Morris' teammates from last year, Nikola Vujcic and Yotam Halperin, have also recently announced that they have signed contracts with the Greek team Olympiacos.

In light of the mass flight, Maccabi management met yesterday with coach Effi Birenboim, who has been entrusted with rebuilding the ailing franchise, to discuss the situation. Officials at the meeting decided not to bring in another guard to replace Halperin and to rely on its current backcourt players.

Meanwhile, Maccabi is negotiating with guard Will Solomon over his contract. The American guard is said to be asking for an additional $500,000 per season. Another issue discussed at the meeting was a dispute with Omri Casspi over his contract. Casspi says his contract is no longer valid because of a clause that states that if he isn't among the top 8 players in terms of minutes played per game, he becomes a free agent. Maccabi management, however, claims that he is among the top 8 players in terms of minutes per game.

Former Maccabi greats are also looking for new homes, leading to unusual team-ups. Olympiacos yesterday claimed that it was holding talks with Toronto Raptors forward Anthony Parker, who led Maccabi Tel Aviv to numerous titles during his five-year period at the club. If Parker is signed, he will be joining former Maccabi teammates Vujcic and Halperin.
