Route 66 victims paid with their lives for lack of NIS 9-million lane divider
By Avi Bar-Eli
Tags: Traffic accidents

A mere NIS 9 million - that is the cost of installing a lane divider along the northern section of Route 66, where six people were killed in two horrific accidents within a 24-hour period last week. Police believe the fatal crashes last week were the result of drivers' crossing the white line to pass illegally.

At an emergency meeting Sunday with representatives of all the relevant bodies, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz discussed the need for a safety barrier that would separate lanes along the 3-kilometer section of the road between Hatishbi and Hazorea intersections, and ordered
that the work be done immediately. The Israel National Roads Company is expected to complete the project in September. However, it has not been determined yet where the funding will come from.

In early 2007, a lane divider was installed along a dangerous 2.5-kilometer section of the road, between the Megiddo intersection and Moshav Yogev, at a cost of NIS 11 million. During the two preceding years, there had been 12 fatalities along the stretch; since then, there have been none.

Route 66 runs for just 14 kilometers, between the Megiddo and Hatishbi junctions, but the opening of the Trans-Israel Highway brought a big increase in traffic, largely cargo trucks coming from Haifa Port. Despite a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour, imposed two years ago, the road remains hazardous, lacking shoulders and proper lighting.
