Teenager confesses to murder of Ramat Hasharon lawyer

A gag order on the 2006 murder of a Ramat Hasharon lawyer was lifted on Sunday.

On April 10, 2006, attorney Anat Pliner, 42, answered a nighttime knock at the door of her home in the Tel Aviv suburb. When Pliner opened the door, the murderer stabbed her in the stomach. She collapsed and later died en route to hospital.

A 17-year-old high school student has confessed to the killing, and has reenacted the murder in the presence of police. Also, a DNA sample that was found on the murder scene matches the suspect's DNA.

The Tel Aviv Youth Court extended his remand on Friday.

A few weeks ago the suspect was detained by police when riding a motorcycle, which was suspected as stolen, without a valid license. He was shortly questioned, and gave a DNA sample. Police found during a routine check that it matches the DNA extracted from a knife and gloves retrieved from the murder scene.

The teen was arrested again last Thursday, and confessed to Pliner's murder a few hours later. He maintained that he arrived at Pliner's house and asked her for money, even though he had not known her before. Pliner refused and when she started shouting, he stabbed her and fled the scene.

Police questioned the suspect's friends and family in an attempt to establish whether any of them had been privy to his guilt but refrained from informing police. They were all released.

The suspect is a studying in a prestigious Ramat Hasharon high school. The school was thrown into turmoil when his arrest became known.

"He had many weird stories, but we could never believe he's a murderer," his classmates said.

His parents, who have no criminal record, have refused to talk about their son's arrest. His lawyer, Attorney Oron Schwartz, said in response that "at this stage of the investigation we are very wary and suspicious of the findings, including the minor's confession. We maintain that as things are, there are many loose ends, more than the police would admit."

Pliner's relatives have been informed as to the developments in the investigation, and told Haaretz on Sunday that they were shocked to realize the murderer was allegedly a teenager residing in their city.

"We were despaired for a long time. When police summoned us on Thursday, we hadn't thought this was what they wanted to tell us. We feel greatly relieved," they said.

Since the night of the murder, Ramat Hasharon police have been working on the assumption that it was a result of a robbery that went wrong. Three suspects, previously convicted for robbery, have been questioned, but were released for lack of evidence.
