Gay pride parade in Jerusalem will not be cancelled
By Yair Ettinger, Haaretz Correspondant

In a letter sent to the Prime Minister among others, a request was made to prevent the event organizers from gaining a free hand in the management of the profits made by the Gay Pride Parade taking place next week in Jerusalem.

Battles fought over previous years by rabbis and religious members of the public that have resulted in the cancellation of the parade in Jerusalem have been altered in an effort to impose limits and to oversee the event's programming.

In preparation for the parade that is set to take place next week, Members of Knesset from the religious factions and two of the government's Chief Rabbis turned to the gay-lesbian community's "Open House" in Jerusalem on Thursday, requesting that they instruct the police to distance the parade from the city center in order to "limit the sexually motivated content of the parade and to prevent the event organizers from gaining a free hand in the management of the profits."

The letter was sent by attorney Doron Shmueli, on behalf of the Shas Party and its leader, Eli Yishai, Member of Knesset, Uri Ariel (National Union-National Religious Party), the Chief Rabbis and representatives from the Jerusalem City Council.

The contents of the letter which was also sent to the Government Legal Advisor, Menachem Mazuz, Minister of Interior Defense, Avi Dichter, the police commissioner, Major-General Dudi Cohen and Jerusalem district commander, Major-General Aron Franco, also requested that "the parade be confined to a closed area, entrance to which will be permitted only to those above 18 years of age."

The extremist Haredi faction, "The Haredi Community," has not been involved with the dispute concerning the parade in previous years due to internal criticism Nevertheless, a Haredi protest is being organized for the beginning of the week, under the authority of one of the leaders of the Haredi Community group, Rabbi Moshe Shetranboch, and during the week, garbage bins will be set alight in the capital's streets as part of the protest's activities.

Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade-26 June

The Gay Pride Parade in Jerusalem is expected to take place next Thursday, 26 June. The procession will leave from Independence Park located in the country's capital; it will continue along King David Street and will finish with a celebratory rally in Liberty Bell Park.

Recently, a report documented ten demonstrations due to take place in Jerusalem protesting the Gay Pride on the same day as the parade itself.

Since then however, there have been indications that this year's protest will have a significantly lower impact than those in previous years, principally because of an understanding reached by the Haredi and religious communities that it is precisely their objections that have raised attention to the violence instigated by religious youths against the gay-lesbian community during the parades.
