Environmentalists win decade-long war against Eilat fish farms
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10

Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for June 18, 2008.

The final chapter in the most important victory for environmentalists in the history of Israel concluded this week, when the Eilat fish farms finally closed their doors.

Human activity in and around Eilat has drastically contributed to the environmental degradation of the Red Sea. That impact has caused irreversible damage to the sea's reefs, some of the most biologically diverse in the world, which house hundreds of species of corals and fish and attract scuba divers from all over the world.

Marine biologists agree that the fish farms, which introduced nonnative species to the delicate ecosystem of the Gulf, were a primary contributing factor.
