Latin America Jewish Congress honors Chilean President
By Haaretz Staff
Tags: Chilean Jewish Community

The Latin American Jewish Congress on Tuesday honored Chilean President Michelle Bachelet with the Shalom Prize, an award bestowed on those it considers to be "the builders of peace between peoples."

The award was granted at the request of Chile's Jewish community, in acknowledgement of the "tireless political support" of the president for "the values of democracy and human rights."

"The president is a clear example for what the world expects from its political leaders: that they work for a more peaceful and safer world, for democracy, the full respect for human rights and for minorities," said LAJC president Jack Terpins.

LAJC Director, Claudio Epelman, stressed: "The contribution of the policies of Bachelet's government, the construction of an inclusive society with full respect for minorities, has without a doubt a clearly beneficial effect on coexistence and respect, two values that are widely reflected on Chilean society, an example for pacific coexistence between minorities."

Bachelet, who took office on 2005, is the first woman to president of Chile.
