Peres in Jordan: Palestinian, Syrian tracks shouldn't affect each other
By The Associated Press
Tags: Jordan

President Shimon Peres said Wednesday that Israel must treat its negotiations with Syria and the Palestinians separately, rather than as a single track.

"I think we are negotiating with the Palestinians and we are negotiating with the Syrians and one should not affect the other, Peres said, adding he couldn't say how long it would take to reach a positive conclusion on eitehr front.

Peres was speaking in Jordan, where he was attending a meting of 29 Nobel peace winners. The laureates had gathered in the ancient city of Petra, built by Nabateans some 2000 years ago, for two days of discussions on issues such as the global food crisis, economic development and education.

During the meeting, Jordan's king warned that it would be a serious mistake to miss the chance for an Israel-Palestinian peace this year, as called for by U.S. President George W. Bush.

U.S.-ally Abdullah II said that the Middle East must "move out of this threat zone" and that the single most important step for the region is to have a comprehensive settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Abdullah said that once there is a settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the region would become one that is "unified, at peace, and ready to move forward."

"This work, the work of peace and progress, should have all our support," the king added, and cautioned that "unprecedented dangers remain, with extremism that feeds on violence and frustration."

"It would be a serious mistake to miss the opportunities we have this year: to establish, finally, a sovereign, independent, and viable Palestinian state... along with a secure and recognized Israel," Abdullah said.

Participants at the Petra conference included laureates such as Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel and Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama.

Arab and African officials, such as Arab League chief Mousa of Egypt and Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, currently the chairman of the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference, were also present.

Wiesel, who won the 1986 Nobel peace prize, proposed that a commission of Nobel winners be set up to monitor world hunger and the international food crisis, and that laureates travel to hunger stricken areas to learn about the problem firsthand.

Organized by the King Abdullah II Fund for Development and the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, the Petra conference is the fourth such gathering. The meeting was also expected to put to use a $10 million fund launched last year to promote graduate studies for Mideast students, mainly from Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories
