Retail shops and hotels lower costs to lure penny-pinching Israelis
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: oil, food, Israel, economy
Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for June 17, 2008.

Protests across the world over rising food and oil costs have become a commonplace occurrence lately, and while Israelis haven't yet taken to the streets, they are pinching their pennies.

Most major food providers are substantially raising the cost of staples, including rice, pasta and corn. The price of beef alone is expected to rise by 50 percent in coming days.

But on the other side of the consumer coin, retail stores and hotels are lowering rates in an attempt to withstand increasing shopper frugality.
