Arab League: Construction in E. Jerusalem 'destroys' Israel-PA talks
By DPA

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa on Tuesday condemned Israeli construction in East Jerusalem as severely injurious to the ongoing peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

"We are following up this issue with extreme concern because settlements are going to destroy the present peace process if they have not already destroyed it," Mussa said in remarks to reporters after talks with Jordanian Prime Minister Nader Dahabi in Amman.

The Arab League Secretary-General added: "We will not remain silent versus this dangerous situation which changes realities on the ground."

Mussa was visiting Jordan in order to participate in a conference of Nobel Prize laureates which is due to open in the ancient city of Petra on Wednesday.

Dahabi, for his part, said: "We reject the expansion of Israeli settlements particularly in East Jerusalem because it negatively affects the current peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians."

The Jordanian prime minister's comments echoed those of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice , who criticized settlement activity on Sunday as having a "negative effect" on peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

The condemnations came in response to the cabinet's approval of building hundreds of new housing units in East Jerusalem, which was captured by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 Six-Day war.

Palestinians seek to make East Jerusalem the capital of an independent state, the establishment of which Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas negotiating with Israel.

Mussa and Dahabi expressed their backing for efforts under way to hold dialogue between Abbas' Fatah movement and the Islamic Hamas group, which controls the Gaza Strip.
