Israeli Arab jailed for 17 years for driving suicide bomber
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent

The Haifa District Court on Tuesday sentenced Israeli Arab Fahri Manzur to 17 years jail time for driving a Palestinian terrorist to Hadera in 2005, where he perpetrated a suicide bombing.

Six people were killed and dozens were wounded in the attack.

Manzur, a 29-year-old resident of the northern village of Jatt, was earlier convicted of aiding the enemy in wartime and aiding murder.

The Jatt resident was arrested following a joint investigation by the Shin Bet Security service and police. His indictment stated that in October 2005 Hassan Abu Zeid, the suicide bomber, left the West Bank for Israel in possession of a bag containing explosives.

Zeid subsequently met Manzur and another man in Israel, at which point Manzur drove him to the market in downtown Hadera, where the bomber subsequently blew himself up in front of a felafel stand.

In their sentence, the judges stressed that even though they had not seen evidence that Manzur had desired the deadly consequences of the attack, they were convinced he was aware that he was aiding a suicide bomber en route to carry out an attack. They further stated that the 29-year-old was aware that he was assisting in the perpetration of a terror attack.

The judges added that the attack cut short many lives, and that the terrorist's goal was clear and simple: "To bring about the removal of the State of Israel from the face of the Earth."

"Terrorist acts are intended to harm the fabric of life in our country, to spread fear and terror, to fragment the coexistence of Arab and Jewish citizens of the State of Israel. Joining the terrorist act constitutes joining the worst of the country's enemies, and it was not for nothing the accused was convicted of aiding the enemy," the judges stated.
